Philosophy, Feminism, and Faith

Rate this book
"The stories are powerful, sometimes heart-rending, sometimes lyrical, but always deeply personal. And there is some very good philosophizing as part of the bargain." --Merold Westphal

How can the seemingly separate lives of philosopher, feminist, and follower of a religious tradition come together in one person's life? How does religious commitment affect philosophy or feminism? How does feminism play out in religious or philosophical commitment? Wrestling with answers to these questions, women who balance philosophy, feminism, and faith write about their lives. The voices gathered here from several different traditions--Catholic, Protestant, Quaker, Jewish, and Muslim--represent diverse ethnicities, races, and ages. The challenging and poignant reflections in Philosophy, Feminism, and Faith show how critical thought can successfully mesh with religious faith and social responsibility.

A very uneven book when it comes to the contributions of the 18 authors. Some feel a bit forced, because, I think, they try to find and fit feminism and feministic philosophy into the field, and it has to be something different than what history has given us(by male philosophers). Others are simply bad because they fall into the tradition of Marx. Faith diversity is not very good, as I believe, three of the Christians are Quakers. Some chose to write a very tedious way, others decided upon a more memoir-style. The book is mostly reflections on how, or how not, the three(faith, philosophy, and feminism) go together, either in personal experience or on philosophical terms.

There are a few authors that managed to engage me with a four-star rating, but most were a 2-star and some 3-star. Not really worth a read since it's long and gives little back.

I learned a lot from this book about other religions and roles of women along with society and religious traditions of feminism for women. An excellent read. Many viewpoints were considered.
