Vicki and the Brown Mare is one of several books Sam Savitt wrote about Vicki Jordan and her horses. Skylark, the brown mare that Vicki discovers on her neighbors farm, is talented but unschooled. Vicki sets her mind to bringing this mare to the condition she knows she can reach. Along the way, Vicki finds she has a lot to learn about horses, riding, and allowing one to find their own niche in this world. Vicki is faced with some tough decisions, but this intelligent young woman with a scrappy personality and a big heart is just the person to face them.

Vicki Jordan is a great heroine. She's likeable and relatable, and her exploits are believable. What we see of her family and friends feels organic, and the depth of knowledge the author has about horses and the horse world is unmistakable. Sam Savitt novels cater to the horse lover, and I always enjoy rereading them.
