The Life and Death of Benjamin Brash

Rate this book
The life and death of Benjamin Brash by Egle Skei Harry Potter, Twilight, Lord of the Rings and Avatar have all shown our fascination in exploring other worlds. Now Egle Skei takes us into the spirit world to meet ghosts, angels and demons. We meet cheeky, intelligent poltergeists, mournful white ladies, forgetful gengangers and many more spiritual characters, not in a scary, horror story but in an age-old story of love across a divide. From the feuding families of Romeo and Juliet to love between races, cultures, and religions, love's capacity to unite and to divide has long intrigued authors and readers. Now Ms Skei, thoughtfully and humorously, explores potentially the greatest divide love must try to span, that between life and death. But as love grows so does hate and fear, threatening both the spiritual and physical worlds.

I approached the book questioning whether it would be something that I could get into. A love story between someone living in the Shetland Islands and the ghost of a young woman who died tragically in 1962 is not the type of book I normally read after all. However I have to say that once you get into the story you find so much more to it than either just a love story or a ghost story.
The characters are wonderfully drawn and Steph the cheeky Scottish poltergeist I have found a character who I would love to read more of.
As love blossoms between Benjamin and his White Lady so does anger in the spirit world which spirals into a full blown war between ghosts and demons.
Overall Ms Skei has produced a book which holds something fresh, original and with a charm and warmth all of its own

The basic gist is that Benjamin moves into an old house on Shetland Island and falls in love with a ghost. The story was in many ways sweet and hopeful but the many editing errors were an annoying distraction. THe author is not a native English speaker which probably accounts for the numerous verb tense and other grammatical errors. However, it seems these ebooks devots little time to editing.
