1957 1st Edition/1st Printing GATES OF FEAR by Barnaby Conrad (Author). A tour of the great bullrings of the world and behind the scenes, generally firsthand accounts of the great matadors.
noon ~~ Making a quick return to one of last year's unfinished reading projects with this title by Barnaby Conrad. I've read a few others of his and enjoyed them, and this was also interesting except for the sections where he quoted other authors.
Well, those were still interesting but I would have preferred Conrad's own thoughts. But anyway, I did enjoy the visits to some of the world's best known and important bullrings. Each chapter discusses one plaza de toros and tells about major events that happen place there.
But it is not necessarily a travel guide, and the author explains this to readers before he ever begins the tour. It is a collection of essays and thoughts inspired by the bullrings, the matadors who fought or died in them, and the author's memories of each one. The reader gets a feeling for the atmosphere each location has and what it can feel like to be there in person, whether in the stands or down in the sand.
Some repetition from from Conrad's other books, but that is to be expected. Great pictures and drawings throughout the book. I am happy to have it in my collection.
Excellent fascinating big book, superbly and eloquently written, with black and white pictures and illustrations by the author as well as pictures of the author and stories of his own amateur bullfighting. I do not like he repeated some things from his other books such as the manolete book or other people's quotes , but what irked me most was quoting the overrated spy Hemingway and his works on the matter and also the opposing views of the proSpca crowd. all in all however I am glad I own this classic and I have read it and enjoyed it. It covers Spain, The nonlethal part of it in Portugal and France. Covering Mexican,Spaniard and Portuguese Fighters. A Bygone era, a better era, Men where Men and the bravado whether crazy or not is interesting. the running of the bulls is also covered not just the art of tauromachy.
