About the author

John Griffith Chaney, better known as Jack London, was an American novelist, journalist and activist. A pioneer of commercial fiction and American magazines, he was one of the first American authors to become an international celebrity and earn a large fortune from writing. He was also an innovator in the genre that would later become known as science fiction.

London was part of the radical literary group "The Crowd" in San Francisco and a passionate advocate of animal rights, workers’ rights and socialism. London wrote several works dealing with these topics, such as his dystopian novel The Iron Heel, his non-fiction exposé The People of the Abyss, War of the Classes, and Before Adam.

His most famous works include The Call of the Wild and White Fang, both set in Alaska and the Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as the short stories "To Build a Fire", "An Odyssey of the North", and "Love of Life". He also wrote about the South Pacific in stories such as "The Pearls of Parlay" and "The Heathen".

Il progetto di una crociera per il mondo non realizzatosi perfettamente secondo le intenzioni originarie, diede comunque modo a London non solo di scriver il Martin Eden, ma anche di lasciarci questi piccoli capolavori che, ambientati nel Sud Pacifico, narrano di lotte, di sentimenti profondo, di lealtà e tradimento, di fortune creati e distrutte in un batter d'occhio, di viaggi e naufragi. Racconti bellissimi, che London scrive con evidente passione, travasando in essi le proprie esperienze autobiografiche, ma stemperate dalla fantasiosa sapienza narrativa che lo contraddistingue. Per gli amanti del buon Jack, da leggere assolutamente.

Questo libro (in 2 volumi) offre un'interessante ed esaustiva panoramica sulle opere di Jack London attraverso una serie di racconti più o meno brevi.
La parte migliore è, senza sorprese, quella relativa al grande Nord, caratterizzata da racconti spesso crudi ma di grande sensibilità e verità. Anche i racconti sul mondo della boxe, sulla lotta sociale e sugli scenari fantastici, mostrano come Jack London sia riuscito a comprendere la società del suo tempo e ad immaginare molti aspetti poi divenuti concreti della società un secolo successiva a lui. La parte sui mari del sud, senz'altro molto interessante in certi punti, è quella che può risultare più noiosa.
Una lettura non sempre facile, ma spesso entusiasmante, fa di questo libro una raccolta comunque di altissima qualità. Imperdibile.
