Anchored by a prose poem on a series of baptisms she’s witnessed, Jen Rose Yokel’s second collection of poetry has grown out of the seven years since her transplant from the South to New England. Her combination of free verse and poetic forms capture overheard conversations, psalms of longing and lament, the nostalgic tension that comes with age, and musings stirred by early pandemic quarantine. In this collection, Jen awakens readers to mysteries all around and encourages them to dive deeper than what's on the surface.

I received an advance copy of the book and planned on reading it slowly until the release, but I couldn’t! Poem after poem spoke to my heart, and the pages seemed to flow from one to another. One moment I thought that the poet had somehow taken residence in my mind, and other moments the thoughts struck me as profoundly new and revealed fresh insight. I am so thankful this book of poetry will soon be available to all. I will come back to it again and again!
Jen Rose Yokel’s new collection of poems and prose is something, I believe, that will appeal to wide range of readers. As the summary states, her words invoke feelings of nostalgia and familiarity. I was left in awe by the titular work of prose and many of the poems pulled me in for a second look. Don’t hesitate to pick up Beneath the Flood- you won’t regret it!
It’s such a small book, and yet a feast of a spread that welcomes you to savor, eat till you are full, and linger in this place. Through seasons and milestones, Jen Rose Yokel walks between this world and the one to come, reaching across the veil to offer a taste of that feast and showing us how to forage the ingredients here and now. This little collection is a place to sit at the table, invited to taste and see that the Lord is good.
I've loved watching Jen's poetry journey the last ten years. She has a great voice and a tender heart and a wonderful way with words. She gently invites her readers into her world, then shows them how to see the beauty in their own.
I love the way Jen takes simple, concrete pieces of everyday life and weaves them into poetry that digs into the heart. Her poems make me miss northern autumns and snow, but also remind me why I'm thankful to live in southern climes now. These are poems to savor, a couple at a time.
Beneath the Flood by Jen Rose Yokel is a lovely look beneath the surface of the familiar. It is a compassionately watchful and wakeful collection of excellent poetry.
