This ten-volume series is a complete pictorial rendition of China's foremost historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The classic by Ming Dynasty writer Luo Guanzhong is based on the history of the Three Kingdoms when the states of Wei, Shu and Wu emerged from the remnants of the Han Dynasty and began to fight for power and sovereignty. It vividly depicts a
series of famous battles and hundreds of historical characters in one of the most turbulent periods in China's long history.

Though these exciting episodes happened more than 1,700 years ago, they are still remembered and loved by the Chinese. The popularity of the book has remained throughout the centuries and is part of China’s cultural heritage. The novel has also been rendered in the performing arts as well as other literary forms.

About the author

Luo Ben (c. 1330–1400), better known by his style name Luo Guanzhong (罗贯中) (Mandarin pronunciation: [lwɔ kwantʂʊŋ]), was a Chinese writer who lived during the Yuan Dynasty. He was also known by his pseudonym Huhai Sanren (Chinese: 湖海散人; pinyin: Húhǎi Sǎnrén; literally "Leisure Man of Lakes and Seas"). Luo was attributed with writing Romance of the Three Kingdoms and editing Water Margin, two of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature.

Samkok adalah cerita sastra yang sarat dengan unsur kepahlawanan yang mengalahkan ketamakan dan kesewenang-wenangan penguasa. Namun pahlawan yang menang malah kembali berlaku seperti penguasa sebelumnya.

Far better than one written by western writer!
Should be added as must read book at least once to everybody’s list! Especially if you want to learn about Chinese epic roman classic, culture and history, this is an essential reading.

Kein Comic im herkömmlichen Sinn

"Drei Königreiche" ist ein klassischer chinesischer Roman aus dem 14. Jh., der in China ungemein populär ist. Unzählige Variationen in Literatur, Film und Musik beziehen sich auf dieses prägende Werk der chinesischen Literatur.

Auch für Comicfans gibt es Adaptionen, und eine davon liegt hier vor. Über 10 Bände mit jeweils ca. 160 Seiten wird der komplette Roman in Bilder umgesetzt, und bleibt dabei extrem nah an der Vorlage. Dies hat sowohl Vor- als auch Nachteile. Der Vorteil ist offensichtlich - selten kann man erleben, dass ein Buch derart detailgetreu in Comicform vorgelegt wird, und man kann theoretisch das Buch parallel mit dem Comic lesen und sich von den schönen Bildern berauschen lassen. Der Nachteil ist, dass es in der Buchvorlage ab und zu Längen gibt, wenn Armeebewegungen beschrieben werden, und diese Längen wurden halt auch transferiert. Dadurch wirkt das Comic an einigen Stellen sehr prosaisch, wenig spannend und etwas lustlos.

Unabhängig von der Adaption ist aber auch die Erzählweise sehr stockend, und das ganze Comic wirkt eher wie eine Sammlung von Illustrationen zum Buch, als ein eigenständiges Werk - leider fehlt hier der kreative Funke und der Willen zum "sich-lösen" von der Vorlage, um etwas eigenes zu erschaffen.

Die Zeichnungen selbst sind im typischen chinesischen Stil - sehr stilisiert und mit wenig Dynamik. Oft sind Szenen nur angedeutet und Linien verlieren sich im Hintergrund, was aber einen ganz eigenen Reiz ausstrahlt, wenn man sich darauf einlässt. Mir haben sie sehr gut gefallen, wenn auch der erste und zu Teilen der zweite Band noch sehr holprig sind und der Zeichner wie Autor seinen Stil sucht; dies wird aber mit Band 3 deutlich besser.

Ich würde diesen Comic hauptsächlich Fans der Buchvorlage empfehlen, weniger dem typischen Comicleser. "Drei Königreiche"-Fans werden aber sehr viel Freude mit den in diesen 10 Bänden gesammelten Illustrationen haben.

Sebuah karya klasik yang tak lekang oleh waktu. Ditulis oleh Luo Guanzhong dari Dinasti Ming.

Karya besar yang terasuk dalam genre historical fiction. Walaupun ditulis berdasarkan sejarah, karya ini termasuk dalam cerita fiksi terutama karena keberpihakan penulis kepada tokoh Liu Bei.

Menceritakan suatu periode dalam sejarah China di mana sangat banyak orang-orang berbakat yang bermunculan dalam satu fragmen sejarah. Tidak ada satu masa lain dalam sejarah China yang menandingi bakat-bakat yang bermunculan dalam periode tiga kerajaan.

Lengkapnya juga lebih lengkap darip[ada karangannya angka wijaya, soalnya ini versi aslinya sih.

I found nothing in this version to recommend it over the original text. The artwork did not help bring the battles or characters to life, nor did I find it easy to read. Perhaps due to the translation, some of the speech bubbles are not aligned to facilitate flow of reading.

I can't say how many times I have reread the graphic novel version of Romance of the Three Kingdoms. I first purchased the set when I was a Freshman in college and have revisited them from time to time. The art is solid, and the story is as accurate as a 150 page graphic novel can retell.
