Birth Journeys is a diverse collection of 29 encouraging and inspiring birth stories by real Australian women (and men). It includes a wide range of birth experiences and hospital, birth centre, homebirth, unassisted birth, water birth, IVF, caesarean, VBAC and twins. Some stories are warm and lighthearted, some are serene and peaceful, while others are a wild whirlwind experience. Each story is positive, uplifting and empowering.
Birth Journeys also contains contributions from health care professionals, academics and authors including Dr Sarah J Buckley (Gentle Birth Gentle Mothering), Dr Hannah Dahlen, Renee Adair, the Maternity Coalition, Stephanie Corkhill Hyles (25 Ways to Awaken Your Birth Power), Gabrielle Targett (A Labour of Love) and David Vernon (Men at Birth).
Your experience of birth does matter. A ‘perfect’ birth is not always possible, but every woman deserves a positive birth.
I truly recommend this book for anyone, who is planning to get pregnant, is pregnant or has children. The stories that have put into the book have a knack of reassuring you, while also showing that even when birth doesn't go according to "plan", it can still make you feel good and calm. The stories range from hospital births to home births to water births to VBACs to c-sections. My two biggest positives would have to be: 1) The stories are put into groups and you can skip them easily without having to read them first to find out what they are about. A big plus as some birth story books usually have stories in random orders, so if you don't want to read for example about c-sections, you'd have to read what it is about first. 2) It has a lot of informantion right after certain stories, all very informative and helpful.
A wonderfully well written and insightful book for all couples considering their differnt options of childbirth. It answers all the questions you might ask through unique points of view by mothers and fathers who share their wide variety of experiences from home births, mulitple births to c-sections. Leonie also shares information on breastfeeding, Doulas, and even estimating your due date. This book is not only for first time mothers, but for any parent considering alternatives for childbirth. It demonstrates that birth is a natural postive journey to be enjoyed rather than endured.
