A quick read for students with a lot of good information regarding the creation, philosophy, structure and eventual downfall of the Confederate States of America.
My favorite quote comes as the author is talking about issues that led to the downfall of the Confederacy. Apparently, Jefferson Davis and his Vice President, Alexander Stevens, often disagreed in public about how things should be done. “Conflicts such as these may prevent any government from working smoothly.” See any parallels to our current situation?

This is an informational nonfiction book about the Confederate States of America and the Civil War. The audience would be grades 3-6th. It's got really great information and fun looks at different artifacts from the 1800's.
The historical fiction that I would pair with this nonfiction is called I Survived The Battle of Gettysburg, 1863. I paired these two because the story is told from the perspective of a young African American boy following the Underground Railroad to freedom. It's a great story to read and for the students to be able to apply their knowledge of what is happening in history while this fictional story is going on.

This is a short and informational book about how and why the South decided to succeed from the Union and form their own country. Their decision led to the Civil War starting with Fort Sumter and ended at Appomattox. It also discussed the slavery issue and the leadership Abraham Lincoln gave to the country.
