This was an incredible book. A collection of personal stories from some of the greatest Black children's book authors and illustrators of all time. They share interviews about their families - some of which are intergenerational stories of artistry such as the Pinkney and the Steptoe families - as well as stories about some of the most influential and wonderful family members in their lives. All of the stories dig deep and sing songs about the incredible journeys that these artists and their families have taken to become who they are. I loved that each story felt personal, as if I was sitting in the living room with these families and they were sharing their stories with me from across the room. They shifted from sad to happy to profound to wondrous, and it is a gift to see them all in one place. I will be adding this book to my personal collection.
