Living in the 1950's all Blair Singer wanted out of life was to attend college in the fall, get married, raise a family, but all she received was death in the same way her cousin was struck down. Now she's a ghost stuck on Earth until she can perform the one good deed which will gain her access into Heaven. Blair quickly discovers that's easier said than done.
This supernatural book was a great treat. It starts out in Chicago in 1947 and spans through the twenty-first century. Blair Singer dies prematurely and spends many years as a ghost, trying to do one good deed that will grant her access to Heaven. Although good-natured and wanting to prove herself, unforeseen obstacles prevent Blair from getting this break. The book has lots of characters and, even through parts that are titled and tell back stories of others (Abigail Madigan, Karla, Robert), Blair remains the one true main character. And I liked her for her realistic qualities. She is a person I could see as my friend.
The chapters are short and I found myself easily reading several chapters and not even realizing how far I'd gotten. If it hadn't been for "life" getting in my way, I would've read it in one setting.
I have read several of Mark Mackey's novels and like the others this one is written in third person, mostly conversational. Mark doesn't put a lot of emphasis on body action like placement of hands or facial expressions because what and how characters talk shows the action. It also leaves room for me to enjoy the fast paced twists and turns. Mark Mackey has quite the imaginary. Well done, for this story is thoroughly entertaining.
Pleas note:I received this book for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this story. There was so much going on. Mark Mackey created so many great characters within a story that spans nearly six decades. The main character, Blair Singer, is trapped as a spirit on earth until she can perform a good deed. No spoilers from me, you'll have to read it yourself to find out what happens to her. I personally enjoyed how the story progressed and ended. I'm looking forward to finding out more in Mackey's other books in this series.
I admire the author’s intention with this novel. It spans decades and includes many characters. As the story unfolds so does the character development. Not once was I able to predict what would happen next. This is my first novel by Mark Mackey and his imagination impressed me. Unfortunately the copy I read hasn't been edited so that distracted me quite a bit from the actual story. I hope Mr. Mackey addresses these issues and I wish him much success in the future.
I read this book recommended to me by a friend and it was indeed what she said amazing and my kind of read. I absolutely loved the description and how is describes the characters especially the murderer in the beginning.I loved the idea and the way the author went to capture it.
The positives, the characters grow stronger throughout the book. The description isn't too much but not too little and the story isn't predictable.
However I would ask he fix some sentences as so they are smaller and watch the repeated words.
Other than that where is the next book? encore encore heheh
