The author, along with his wife and 18-year-old daughter, and instructors Justin Matterson and Ed Ley-Wilson, were trekking in the Andes of Peru to visit Elvin Berg, a man who had saved the author's life during an Amazon expedition 15 years earlier. However, they walked into the middle of guerrilla warfare and drugs trading and discovered that Berg had been brutally murdered. Anxiously attempting the return home they were forced by illness to stop in a remote mountain village, and there discovered Berg's 6-year-old daughter Elizabeth.
Another antique book gift that I received, it tells the tale of a very English (he says fun stuff like 'good show old trout') gentleman who had fond memories of exploring the jungle in 1970 and then returns w his family in the middle of the shinning path!! Oops. Reads like a travel diary and at 240pg it is a bit boring most of the time but still ok to read. There's actually a climax and happy ending though, which had me glad I read through to the end. I learned a bit about the shinning path but overall wouldn't recommend.
