This book is part of the Images of England series, which uses old photographs and archived images to show the history of various local areas in England, through their streets, shops, pubs, and people.
Now this is how write a local history! The focus of this book is the photographs, which are clear and informative, well spaced on the page and good sizes for seeing them without distortion. Peter Drake’s prose, in the introduction and captions, is well-written, accurate, precise, clear and very pleasant to read after some of my experiences with local history books. His own feelings of nostalgia and regret are included at times, but not in an intrusive way, and these are balanced by his honest evaluations of buildings which appear in need of redevelopment. A lot of the places pictured no longer exist, but luckily they are preserved in this book.
