It's been six months after the events in Capiz. Athena fears her developing powers, knowing it's only a matter of time before she loses control.
Meanwhile, the tension between Naermyth and humanity is growing. Macky believes Mamon is again engaged in shady operations. When Athena is sent to Intramuros to investigate, she triggers a chain of events that pit her against an entity far more malevolent than anything she's ever encountered.
Karen Francisco graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the Ateneo de Manila University. After a brief but very memorable stint in law school, she finally pursued her love of the arts at the University of the Philippines with a second degree in Visual Communications. Francisco started writing Naermyth while interning in a government office, hoping an apocalypse would spice up her paper-pushing routine. She now lives north of the Ruins in a stone lair with her family and fears the day she’ll meet an actual tikbalang.
Finally got to finish the second installment which I got from the recent MIBF. Hopefully there's a mini-sequel for this, as I fwas so eager to follow everything that happened to Athena Dizon.
Only downside of this release is that there are so many typographical errors.
I want to like this book. As in REALLY like it. I did, actually, at least 40% of it. The sequel to Naermyth started off to be super action-packed. Compared to the first, the author’s growth was evident in every page, from the research right down to the fluid dialogues. I found myself turning page after page...until I got to the middle part where it substantially became boring that I wasn’t even sure if I’d ever finish reading. One thing that really made me feel iffy was the supposed romance between Athena and River. The man was not in the story until way past half of the book. And Athena was as romantic as a pile of rocks. I was so frustrated at the romance angle when there wasn’t even something remotely romantic between these two characters. Things only got to be interesting when the climax of the story was building up, right to the part where the characters were trying to find ways to defeat a seemingly undefeated villain. That one I breezed through quite easily.
I do loved the world building that went behind this story. The logic behind aether and spirit, the puzzle that was the Ibig ng Bathala...it was brilliant. The end was also gripping, but if there’s going to be a 3rd book, I hope it’s not gonna be that thick with the plot dragging endlessly. I will still read it and I still am a fan of Karen Francisco. I do hope the 3rd installment would get proofread better as well. This one had a lot of typos and grammar errors that slipped through the cracks.
Will not finish. Stopped at page 86 last year pa. This book, while better than Naermyth, still suffers from the same problems as the first one. The errors kinda take away from the reading experience and I just don't have enough energy to ignore them :( Since Avenida released a revised edition of Naermyth (which I will read btw since I like the world of this series), I'm hoping Revelations will also have a new edition. I will probably get back to this in the future, but it's goodbye for now.
I would recommend this book to those people with varying interests in Philippine mythology and folklore. It has some touch of history too if I may add. The author did well in blending these elements (I’m not sure if this is the right term.) together.
Overall, I enjoyed both books 1 & 2. I loved the twists, the fight scenes and how the author portrayed the interconnectedness of local and foreign myths. Never were they separate in the first place.
May the author continue sustaining the storyline in the next installment. Surely it would take time (Hopefully not too long.) but if it’s worth reading then I’m willing to wait.
Hmm... Lots of good stuff above. Right?
Hopefully in future editions they would pay more attention to spelling. There were a lot of typos and I almost wanted to email them and point out those errors.
It definitely had its moments. A lot was going on, events escalated pretty quickly from book 1, which made it a bit frustrating at times, especially with Athena staying emotionally closed off throughout it all. That really added to my frustration as a reader. Still, great worldbuilding though!
I originally thought this was a duology, so I was pretty surprised by how many loose ends were still hanging by the end. Really hoping for a book 3 soon! 🙏
