"Doña Rosa needs our help." Rico straightened his feathered body and looked at them with round golden eyes. "I can do this." Eyeing the smoking hole in the ground, he hesitated, then jumped in.
Bicultural siblings Rico, Diego, and Araceli Martinez had hoped to enjoy their spring break exploring virtual reality. However, the fun abruptly ends when their inventor friend Don Toño begins work on a new adventure.
While he is out of town, his wife Doña Rosa has an accident and finds herself trapped in the mysterious shed. Unsure of the risks of entering an unfinished adventure, the kids bravely venture into virtual reality to track him down.

Minda lives in Minnesota with her husband and three spunky bilingual kids. Their family has created their own brand of "Mexigringo" as they blend their Papi's Mexican culture with their Mami's Minnesotan culture.
Minda is a teacher of English Learners at a local elementary school. She has taught second grade in Mexico and volunteered in Guatemala, Peru, and other parts of Latin America.
Minda is passionate about teaching children to be proud of their bilingual superpowers. She is hopeful that her readers and her own kids will identify with the Martinez family, and remember that speaking more than one language is one of the many things that can make a kid special.
“The Island Rescue” by Minda Gomez is the third book in the Martinez Kids Adventures series for early and young readers (ages 4-12). Siblings Rico, Diego, and Araceli are looking forward to spending their spring break having more adventures in virtual reality. When their neighbor, Don Toño, tells them that he is working on an upgrade for their glasses, which he invented, they are more excited than ever! There is still some work to be done, however, so he asks that they give him their glasses for just a little while until the new upgrade is ready. But when his wife, Doña Rosa, falls and injures herself in their shed, Rico, Diego, and Araceli have to embark on a new virtual reality expedition despite Don Toño’s requests that they stay offline. Together, they will meet new friends, encounter a few bullies, and best of all, learn about lots of new animals while exploring a brand-new place!
“The Island Rescue” was fun to read even as an adult. The book appears to be geared toward an audience of young readers, mostly between the ages of six and ten, depending on reading levels. In the book, young audience members not only get to learn about the unique animals and terrain of the Galapagos Islands, but also the values of teamwork, supporting friends in the face of bullies, and courage can be found even in the most unfamiliar places.
“The Island Rescue” is a book I would have loved as a child. Some children’s books can be written in a way that tries too hard to emulate a child’s voice. The tone and language of this book, however, seemed entirely authentic. The fun details about colors, sounds, and smells that the siblings experience give the story a sensory experience, which is something that endears not only young readers but readers of all ages in any book they might read.
I also quite enjoyed the fact that a Spanish-English glossary was included at the beginning of the book, and the animal facts at the end. I was quite a good Spanish student in high school, but alas, it has been too many years for me to remember most of what I learned! Personally, I cannot quite remember that there were many books featuring foreign languages when I was a kid. I can recall a few I might have read in middle school, and I remember that it was fascinating to me to learn words in a new language and can remember writing down all the little words and phrases I encountered. I think it is important for young kids to be exposed to different languages, so “The Island Rescue” is a great book for introducing young readers to the Spanish language.
Whether learning to read chapter books for the first time or reading together as a family, “The Island Rescue” by Minda Gomez is sure to be a fun reading experience!
Every day children encounter events that help shape who they are. In the book The Island Rescue, by Minda Gómez, the young characters of Rico, Diego and Araceli are met with the problem of how to help get Doña Rosa out of the shed she is stuck in.
One of the characters that helps them is Don Toño. He is one of my favorite characters because he is full of wisdom and shares it with others. This character shows how families value the elder and how they continue being a resource for the younger generation. The facts about the Galapagos Island and animals that live there were new to me and made for an interesting read.
Children will read about values that are shown through the characters actions and consejos they remember from their elders. This book includes Spanish within the text and a glossary of their pronunciation and its English equivalent. Families will also appreciate the recipe, song and animal facts included at the end.
This is a great addition to the Martinez Family Adventures emerging reader chapter book series which features color illustrations. The series follows three siblings and their family as they go on adventures transforming into animals via a virtual reality machine. I love that each book has multiple social emotional themes, animals, and is also multigenerational. There is usually a recipe in the back and Spanish scattered throughout. I personally feel a connection to these books because my own bilingual family is a blend of American and Mexican just like the author and her story reflects the positives of being bilingual and bicultural as well as some challenges.
They are a good fit for 1st-3rd grade readers or even 4th grade emerging readers.
From an Artic Quest to an Island Rescue! The great adventure never stops. If you are looking for fun books to read with the kids this Summer, Minda Gomez has written stories that will keep your kids entertained and teach them along the way. The first book I read by Minda was a story about an Arctic quest, which was excellent. Her newest book, Island Rescue, takes place in the Galápagos Islands. The Martinez kids (Rico, Diego, and Araceli) with the help of fantastic technology, which also happen to be really cool glasses, go on a quest to find Don Toño who is the only one that is able to assist them in saving their elderly neighbor. Did I mention that these glasses allow the children to turn into creatures one would find in the Galápagos Island? There is a lot to love about this book. There are words in Spanish sprinkled throughout the story. To help the little ones, and anyone learning this second language, Minda provides a helpful list of Spanish words, their meaning, and even the correct pronunciation. She also includes real-life animal facts and even the recipe for agua fresca – a fresh fruit drink. Get your copy of this book and let me know if this review was helpful!
Minda Gomez does it again with this third book in her Martinez Kids Adventures series! This time, the Martinez siblings are off on another virtual reality adventure to save a friend. The trio finds themselves on the beautiful Guapolos islands. As with all these books, the story is enthralling and includes valuable lessons about family, loyalty, and friendship. I also particularly liked the progression of Don Tono's virtual reality project. It's such a remarkable aspect of the story.
These books are an excellent addition to any young reader's library. They are fun, inspiring stories that teach kids while entertaining them. Enjoy!
This is such a cute story that will show kids the importance of family and working together. I really like all the resources the book has. The spanish to english words table at the beginning of the book was especially helpful to me since I only speak english. I also thought it was really cool at the end, there is a bunch of animal facts, so the book is also educational. All in all, it's a great book, and I would definitely recommend it.
I finished this delightful story with my ten-year-old daughter today. We thoroughly enjoyed the reading experience. Gomez flawlessly integrates Spanish culture and language into the everyday lives of her characters. As someone who is attempting to learn Spanish, it was lovely to be able to see familiar words, and learn new ones throughout the story. Although the book does include a vocabulary list at the end, there are generally enough contextual clues to allow young readers to decode meaning. I also love her descriptions of traditional food--they made me feel hungry!
So, what is the story about?
When Doña Rosa is trapped and injured on the eve of Araceli's third birthday, the Martinez children are the only one who can save her. Diego and Rico enter the virtual world to find Don Toño and get the passcode that will save their neighbour. Along the way, they meet a snobby penguin, a friendly lava lizard, a ditzy bird with a vague idea of directions, iguanas, tortoises and more. Gomez's vivid descriptions and illustrations will make young readers feel like they are in their own virtual reality adventuring with the children.
Gomez effortlessly conveys the themes of family, working together, and self-sacrifice in this beautifully illustrated chapter book, that had me tearing up at the end. The story and vocabulary is suitable for beginner readers (maybe as a bedtime story for the whole family), all the way up to independent readers. I highly recommend it!
My daughter gives it five stars too and says everyone should read this book!
Are you looking for a great adventure that is fun to read and has great information about working together, problem solving, and learning about animals? I know I had a fantastic experience reading (traveling) to Galápagos Islands! The author an illustrator, Minda Gomez is absolutely amazing! This is the second adventure and I highly recommend Martinez. Great job!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Having never traveling to the Galapagos Islands before myself, I enjoyed joining the Martinez kids for a fun adventure there as they explore the Islands using virtual reality and set off on a mission to find their neighbor, meeting many new friends along the way. The book is filled with Spanish vocabulary words and interesting animal facts, perfect for kids. I appreciated how author Minda Gomez weaved together information about Galapagos Islands and the many animals that live there while also teaching positive values like teamwork, loyalty, and courage. Overall, a fun new book to add to your collection!
This is such a fun story focused on three siblings who go on a virtual reality adventure. There are animal facts at the end of the book, which is a very nice touch. Overall, reading this book was a very pleasant experience, and we would definitely recommend checking it out, especially to those who are interested in animals.
Es el tercer libro que leo de las aventuras Martínez con mis hijas, ellas disfrutan mucho imaginando que animales quisieran ser ellas y además como familia latina nos identificamos con muchas situaciones descritas en el libro.
The three siblings are in for quite the adventure with more than a few facts and surprises.
Rico, Diego and Araceli's adventures are put on pause as their neighbor heads off to South America on a research trip. When the neighbor's wife accidentally locks herself into the high-security shed, the siblings need to find the passcode, or she'll be stuck there for almost a week. Although the latest updates aren't done on their gear, the siblings grab their headsets and head to the Galapagos Islands in search of their neighbor. While taking the form of animals gives the siblings plenty of advantages, finding the neighbor won't be easy...especially since they have no idea what animal form he's using.
First off, this is an exciting adventure. There's plenty of tension, difficult situations, humorous moments, and lots of warmth and heart. The siblings are pretty down-to-earth and do their best to deal with the situations as they come. There's a little back-and-forth as they don't always agree on everything, and this makes them a natural and loveable bunch. They're easy to root for and fun to cheer on. The 'danger' is just right for the age group, making the tale gripping without going over-board.
Then, this is written in a bilingual direction. There are three pages of word explanations (a mini-dictionary) with the Spanish words used in the story and their English translations. This allows readers to expand their Spanish vocabulary, while seeing the words in use during the story. The Spanish is melted right into the English sentences (words just plopping in). Having a bilingual family myself, this made me smile. We toss in words from the other language (visa-versa) like that, too...a very natural habit.
Lastly, there are animal facts surrounding life on the Galapagos Islands. These come across smoothly during the story, letting readers learn without noticing that it's happening. It covers a wide variety of animals, as well. Add the fun that these animals speak (a side-effect of the high-tech device, which adds the scifi touch), and it's a delight to meet them and their fun personalities.
And lastly-lastly (because this can't be forgotten), there are several helpful editions at the end: a quick summary with illustrations of each animal, the birthday song in Spanish, and an easy drink recipe for kids to make themselves.
Summed up, there's a lot of goodness in these pages. The text is a little longer and suits the medium to high end of chapter book readers nicely. The illustrations break things up well and add more fun to the mix. Plus, they help identify the animals. The tale does start a bit abrupt, and I would highly recommend reading this series as a series because of that. I am looking forward to what adventure this trio will have next. I received a DRC and enjoyed the fun and excitement quite a bit.
Martinez Kids Adventures: The Island Rescue is a creative, engaging, compassionate, fun, unique, magical, exciting, and educational SEL book! Some of the wonderful benefits of this book include learning Spanish words (there is a glossary for reference), fun facts about the Galapagos Islands, strong sibling relationships, important life lessons, exciting animal facts, and relatable characters! Rico, Diego, and Araceli have the most amazing neighbors in the world! Don Tono is the inventor of an incredible virtual reality world. He has the kids test out a few fun adventute settings for him (check out the first two books of this series), but this time things are different. Don Tono asks the children to stop using the virtual reality glasses while he goes away on a research trip. He expresses how important it is that they stay offline. While he is away, the kids witness Dona Rosa fall into the shed. They quickly realize they do not know the combination to help her get out. The kids take the risk to enter the virtual reality world to find Don Tono and get the shed's code. This time the kids are on a mission to save someone they love. Along the way they face temptations to play, are put in situations where they must choose to fit in or stick up for their sibling, and are tested in many ways. This book includes the social emotional values courage, loyalty, sportsmanship, and selflessness. These values truly shine through! This book is lighthearted and entertaining all while driving home some important core values! Also, I adored the sweet birthday party and birthday surprise for the precious 3 year old Araceli at the end! I wish Don Tono and Dona Rosa were my neighbors! I truly love this book and highly recommend it!
Kudos to Minda Gomez on a great premise for the Martinez Kids Adventures series.
This fast-paced adventure story will have you on the edge of your seat! For Rico, Diego, and Araceli, spring break starts off with a fizzle--until they find themselves on a mission to rescue their neighbor’s wife, Doña Rosa. With the help of his virtual transportation technology, the three children are transported to the Galápagos’ Isabela Island as animals and traverse the land in search of their neighbor, Don Toño. As they discover the secrets of the island, they find that not all is as it seems. The stakes are high and the race is on to save Doña Rosa before it's too late!
There are many defining moments in this story. When all seems doomed, the characters show courage and resilience, face daunting challenges, and maintain their core values.
This book is multi-faceted. The author cleverly slips in opportunities for accidental learning, not only by including Spanish words and phrases, but also by including animal fun facts and descriptions.
The bold and colorful illustrations add another layer of diversity to this bicultural story and are a great complement to the text.
This is book 3 in the Martinez Kids Adventures (and if you haven't read books 1 and 2, you should!). In this adventure, Rico, Diego, and Araceli find themselves on The Galapagos Islands when they use their neighbor's virtual reality sunglasses! Each gets to experience being a different animal native to the island!
I love that there are several Spanish words peppered throughout the story.
I love that it's a fun, age-appropriate story!
I love that there are so many colorful illustrations (also by the author!). So great for early middle-grade readers and for kids who love to "read" the pictures like my 5 year old does!
I loved learning things I didn't know about The Galapagos animals!
And in case my opinion doesn't convince you, here's what my daughter told me with a huge smile on her face when she finished it: "Mom! I loved it! Can you tell the author I stayed up reading it until 10:30! And ask her when the next one will be ready!" If that isn't high praise for this lovely book, then I don't know what is!
The Island Rescue is such a fun read. The Martinez Family has such an endearing relationship with Don Toño and Doña Rosa. I love how the Martinez Kids Adventures series continues to highlight their connection and also features so much Spanish! My family relates deeply to the bilingual and bicultural background of the characters, so it is really enjoyable to read this story! It is also fun to learn different dialects of Spanish as Gomez seamlessly uses a variety of words and expressions that reflect different Spanish-speaking cultures. The Galapagos Islands are a fascinating place and this story highlights the diversity of animals and geographical features that are found there. Bravo Minda! Another entertaining and educational masterpiece!
Another excellent adventure book by Minda Gomez!! Kids will be engaged with every word, every scene, every chapter. Kids that enjoy animals, geography and adventure will be excited by the book’s animal characters and the story. Catching up with the Martinez’s children and Don Toño’s inventions is always a treat. So many teachable themes!! Friendship, courage, family, empathy, language, culture, love. As a language advocate and bilingual, bicultural parent, I appreciate how Minda weaves in Spanish words and phrases and even includes a glossary that educates the reader about language and culture. Next book, please!!! Maritere R. Bellas
Don’t miss this wonderful adventure for kids! Minda Gomez has blended a virtual reality adventure for three siblings with plenty of interesting creatures that inhabit the Galápagos Islands. With humor and laughter, readers will learn Spanish, discover the varied island inhabitants, and find plenty of thrills, action and suspense. Parents and kids will enjoy this third book in the series, Martinez Kids Adventures. (Enjoy the beginning of the series as well: Book #1 - The Secret Door and Book #2 - The Arctic Quest!)
What an amazing tool to expose your kids to Spanish! Also a great tool to get a sneak peak into the lives of bicultural kids. A mystery kids will be so invested in they won't want to put the book down.
The Spanish glossary and pronunciation guide is so thorough and would make a great teaching tool in classrooms and in homes.
A must have and I love how it incorporates how families can work together to achieve something big!
