"Revelation: Images of Redemptive History," by Joseph R. Holder is an excellent commentary on the book of Revelation. It explains from Rev. 1:19 that the book of Revelation is divided into things the Apostle John had seen, things now, and things to come. For hundreds of years, most people did not have their own copy of the bible, so they probably did not search for deep, hidden meanings (even though the bible can withstand the most intense scrutiny). What would the book of Revelation have meant to them? It depended on what the Lord revealed to them, but they most likely focused more on overriding themes rather than intricate details. The book of Revelation is PRIMARILY the revelation of Jesus Christ, NOT of the future. From Genesis to Revelation, the theme of the bible is battle, and this theme is leading up to the climax of the book of Revelation with Jesus Christ being victorious over ALL of His enemies and the redeemed being conquerors. It is a book intended to elevate our eyes from this vain and terrestrial world in which it appears that we are losing, and remind us that Jesus has already won, and through Him, we (the redeemed) are going to win!
