A very worthy memoir; essential reading. The perspective of a worker and militant who saw it all - from the fall of Wilhelmine Germany and Weimar, to the inside of Nazi then Stasi jails. Starting from scratch in West Germany, and witnessing the radical wave of the 60s rise and ebb away.
...And Red is the Colour of Our Flag is one of those books whose impression remains long after the final page has been turned.
Hopefully one day a new English edition will be released to make it more widely available.
incroyable.
Oscar Hippe is, in short, a hero. This book is his life story. Having grown up in the Kaisers Germany, he became involved with the SPD in his teenage years, going on to become one of the most dedicated fighters for working class emancipation I have ever come across. Having participated in the revolutionary upheaval from 1918-1923 he went on to become a tireless fighter of fascism and Stalinism, suffering imprisonment and torture at the hands of the Nazis and later from the Russians as they took control of eastern Germany after WWII.
But Comrade Hippe remained true to his own conviction and knowledge of Marxism and revolutionary politics. A talented theorist (although I disagree with him on the nature of the USSR) he was also not afraid to fight for socialism when it most mattered; participating in several armed street battles with supporters of the Social Democrats, the Friekorp and later the brown and black shirts.
A fantastic autobiography of the political life of a truly heroic individual.
