We recently got out first betta fish (his name is Frasier!), and I checked this out from the library thinking that it would tell me more about how to care for him and how to make him happy. This is definitely not that, but it worked out because it ended up being the perfect little "did you know?" type of read, perfect to read to my son (and I learned a few things as well!).
He liked it because it was pictures of "Frasier fish".
Hadn’t realized this was a kid’s book when requesting from my library’s online catalog so I was expecting something with more information about caring for betta fish but this had virtually no information at all, other than ‘this is a betta fish and this is what they look like’. Oh well.
This beginning-level Juvenile nonfiction book looks at the habits of Bettas, primarily in the wild. Bettas' popularity has pets has resulted in widespread mistreatment in the pet trade. I would have liked to see a discussion of responsible care of these fish and a recommendation to stay away from retailers who sell sick bettas.
Even for a book for little kids it had very little information. The pictures are pretty, and the information about wild bettas was interesting. But it doesn't have any information at all about how to keep them safe and healthy in the home, which is what I was looking for, and would probably be of interest to many children who have these lovely pets.
