Read in two sittings in downtown Boston, between 3:00 and 4:20 am. This movie is suffocating and powerful, and the screenplay is as well (the endnotes by writer/director Tim Robbins are helpful too).

Watch this movie.

I needed to read a screenplay today and this was the one. Part of my reading was due to procrastination on my own script writing but I got caught up in this gripping drama. It points out that if you can find redemption in someone considered scum (Matt Poncelet/Sean Penn) for the evil he did then everyones voice needs to be heard. The screenplay includes notes from Tim Robbins about scenes/Production and omissions. I appreciated it. Now I need to see the movie. I can see why Susan Sarandon won an academy award for this role.

The character that changes the most in the book is sister, she is surprised that the inmate she's writing to is even willing to associate with her knowing that he doesn't usually write
