Covenant Affirmations is the Evangelical Covenant Church’s attempt to capture its “essence.” The book portrays the tenets, beliefs, values, and principles that feed the denomination’s structure and patterns. Frisk’s contribution is by no means exhaustive; however, one would be ill-advised to learn more about the Covenant without spending time in his work. The work acts as both a launching pad and a grounding foundation. They simultaneously leave readers with a thirst for further study, yet also satisfied with what is given. Any new student of the Covenant can – and ought to – run to Affirmations for inspiration and foundation.
The most refreshing aspect is the general simplicity of presentation and thought Frisk puts forward. Most cornerstone denominational or theological works must, by nature, pay close attention to presentation. Authors communicate theology through everything, including table of contents, organization, and section titles! The subsequent temptation here is to overcomplicate the presentation. Covenant Affirmations is the exception to this pattern. The twelve simple chapter titles neither intimidate readers nor dilute concepts, helping build an overall presentation that is friendly and hospitable. Regrettably, not many theology texts can claim the same.
I really liked this book. However, I had just read The Christian Mosaic of Belief and it was very similar. The book has a similar format for each chapter and gets very technical at times. I also wreslted with the older references to culture that I didn't necessarily experience.
My second reading was much better. My theological knowledge ha increased and therefore my capacity to understand the content was increased. This I enjoyed the book more this time.
From both a theological and literary perspective, a jaunty, readable book. It is succinct without being either erudite or insipid. However, never in my long reading career have I seen so many spelling and grammatical errors in anything. Anywhere. Ever. He who is faithful in little...
If you can stomach the deplorable lack of copy editing, please read. It's a good little book.
Excellent exposition on the theology of the Evangelical Covenant Church. Frisk does a great job emphasizing the practical nature of theology within the context of the church. Important to recognize Frisk's work is not overly extensive, but outlines the major theological viewpoints of the ECC.
I had to read this book for a class I am taking. I was disappointed. Frisk's work is basically an attempt to make a neo-orthodox reading of Evangelical Covenant theology.
