I bought a Dumas anthology on my Kindle. I read The Count of Monte Cristo because my former 8th grade students read it in the 9th grade, and I hadn't read it yet. I LOVED it. So I wanted to read the sequel...didn't know there was a sequel...was happy to find a sequel. But, as I began reading it I found the writing to be awful, inelegant, perfunctory. Recaps of events in the original Monte Cristo were related inaccurately. The characters were made to be mawkish, and completely inconsistent with Dumas' creations. Furthermore, the insertion of a baby switch in the Villefort family history was beyond even the most imaginative credibility. The writing, the plot, the whole effort is gross. I can't and won't bother to finish it.
Volume 1 of The Son of Monte Cristo was very good, so I had high hopes for Volume 2. From the beginning of the second part, with the long-winded narration of something that had happened once to some characters who had next to NOTHING to do with The Count of Monte Cristo I suspected I would be disappointed and when I skipped over all the filler material that was just simply BORING and got towards the end, I was simply aghast! As far as the other "sequels", Daughter of Monte Cristo was excellent, and was a nice way to continue the story and had a nice tidy happy ending. Edmund Dantes was okay, Wife of Monte Cristo was simply The Son of Monte Cristo Volume 1, and Countess of Monte Cristo was boring and had NOTHING to do with the Count of Monte Cristo, I will admit I skipped over a lot of it but I could find no explanation of how the character was considered to be Countess of Monte Cristo since it never even mentioned HIM.
DNF @ chapter 21 This is the sort of poorly done fanfiction I would expect from a preteen who hasn't got a grasp of proper writing yet, where everything in incosistent and the characters are so much out of character they're not even in the same universe, and the prose is bland and perfunctory. This doesn't deserve the honour of being called a sequel, nor to be assossiated with Dumas in any way. Guh. Bring out the brain bleach.
It had promise to start with, and I like the Fanfar adventure, however I was hoping he would at least have a big part to play in the finale but was hardly mentioned, it really played out like two separate books, Fanfar's story and The son of Monte Cristo's story. Could have ended better all round.
