Ten years ago, Mariah Ann (Ryan) Kendall walked away from her hometown, the nightmares of her childhood, and the love of her life……and straight into the arms of the devil, himself. From an abusive marriage to a life on the run, Ryan somehow survives and eventually makes her way back to the home she ran from to begin with. Confronted with more than one demon, Ryan is forced to face the ghost of her alcoholic father and the house where he died. She must also face Colton Wade. Her childhood sweetheart - the boy she left behind without so much as a goodbye, is now a man filled with bitterness and anger. Attraction simmers between them, in spite of their tumultuous past. But secrets can be deadly and soon Ryan learns that Colt has a few of his own. And among those secrets, a monster lies in waiting. A monster that soon leaves body after body in its wake. A monster that will stop at nothing to get what it wants; Mariah Ann Kendall, dead.

Jennifer Hayden was born in Washington State. During her childhood and young adult years, she spent many hours lost in the adventures of a good book. She began writing her own stories at the age of 12 when she "ran out of books to read at the library." By the time she graduated from high school, she already had a job as a secretary/office manager, where she eventually met her husband, Mike. For the next several years, she wrote in her spare time, sharing her manuscripts with friends and family. At the urging of two good friends, she decided to go for broke and leave her secretarial career behind in pursuit of this magical literary journey. She now has 54 books available.

2 stars feels overly generous. Seriously thinking of moving this to a 1 star.

My first reaction to this book was none of the characters are likable. How do you get vested in a contrived story that challenges the believability factor and doesn't have any likable characters? The answer is you don't. I persevered to the end, but felt I should have DNF'd.

SPOILER:
My reaction at 54%: OMG...this is a soap opera nightmare! So Ryan knows Colt is married, but he took his wedding ring off the day before and called the lawyer to start divorce proceedings and he did call the wife to say he wanted the divorce. So then it's OK that they screw. But oops he did fail to tell her that he's married to her sister (that she thought was missing). But her friends say it's OK because her sister is not a good person and has issues. Who are these people/characters? And don't forget that her ex-husband (opps the papers weren't filed...) who she met while stripping and pole dancing wants her back.

The author has written other stories that are much better.

Not to bad

This book is constantly moving and keeps you guessing. I enjoy the mystery of who's really who. This story keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time. Although I felt that the sex scenes could have been a little more descriptive. I am glad that once everything is figured out that there's no long drawnout ending.

I was pleasantly surprised with this book. Started off predictable - the 'secret' was pretty easy to figure out, but then you realize that there's so much more to the story. Still a light read.

Great Read!

This book moved along at a good pace, capturing my attention. However, several characters were unexplained near the end and confused me.
