Nancy Bush is a New York Times bestselling author of over forty novels, including the River Glen Series, Nowhere Series, and numerous stand alone novels. She also is the co-author of Last Breath, Last Girl Standing, and the Wicked Series, written with her sister and bestselling author Lisa Jackson, as well as the collaborative novels Sinister and Ominous, written with Lisa Jackson and Rosalind Noonan.

Nancy has called Oregon her home all of her life. She grew up in a small logging community and after graduating from high school, attended Oregon State University where she met her husband, Ken and graduated with a degree in nutrition. They married a few years after graduation and together they have one daughter. After working in banking and the travel business, with her daughter still in diapers, Nancy read an article in Time Magazine about young mothers who, once the last diaper was changed and the final bottle was washed, pulled out their typewriters and wrote romance novels for the then expanding market. Nancy convinced her sister, Lisa Jackson, that they should try their hand at writing.

After writing several successful romance novels such as Lady Sundown, Miracle Jones, Jesse’s Renegade and Scandal’s Darling and a stint writing for one of ABC’s top-rated daytime shows: All My Children, she turned her attention to writing thrillers for Kensington Publishing. Today, her books appear on The New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly national bestseller lists.

In her free time Nancy enjoys walking, working on jigsaw and crossword puzzles and hanging out with family and friends. When she and Ken aren’t visiting their daughter and grandchildren in Southern California, Nancy is busy working on her next book!

September Rafferty, a new detective with the Laurelton, Oregon police department, is dealt a huge challenge as her first major case. They're trying to track a serial killer who carves "Do Unto Others..." on the victims, all who happen to resemble her. To further complicate matters, Jake Westerly, her first love (unrequited), is part of the suspect focus because of his relationship with one of the victims.

To say September comes from a dysfunctional family is an understatement (all of her siblings were given the birth month as their name). She and her twin brother, August, were disowned by their wealthy father because they both chose law enforcement as careers and also seem to be fairly estranged from their other siblings. The family dynamics are an important backdrop to the story as the killer seems to have established a connection to them in the way he reached out to September. While entertaining, it was a weak aspect of the story as some of their behaviors were tough to swallow.

September and Jakes' romance is one aspect that works. They have a history so there was no instant relationship at play. I liked both characters and September's naïveté matched her experience, or lack thereof. She made some serious blunders, especially at the climax, but they were believable and the ending was exciting.

It's an interesting story, somewhat weighed down by an enormous cast with quite a few red herrings. And, there's an earlier connected book, Nowhere to Run, that would be advisable to read first (I didn't). There's a surprise at the end to suggest a third book is coming but I'm not aware of one planned.

A great continuation story - the serial killer stayed "hidden" for most of the book, some red herrings tossed in my way, but some things just weren't adding up. This is a pretty good series, took me a bit to get use to Ms. Bush's writing, but now that I have a handle on it, I like it.

A deeper glimpse into the life of one of the twins with the cool names and nicknames, with the serial killer tying into their elementary school - same classes. The twins do come from wealth albeit a dysfunctional family with a vineyard! Some romance flowing in this book with some angst - right up Kjen's alley! :)

I think this book was a bit too long, and I had some difficulty following it in places, but it was still a good story. As one other reviewer mentioned, at times it seemed like I had been reading forever and not getting very far with the story. Nevertheless, it was a good story and I enjoyed it.

I understand the next book in this series will be "Nowhere Safe." I don't know when it will be released. I am looking forward to it.

Mon avis en Français

My English review

Detective September "Nine" Rafferty is working her first big case. There is a sadistic serial killer on the loose. He is strangles his victims then carves a saying onto their bodies. It is always the same message. He leaves them out in the open in a field for anyone to find. No one can figure out what the nessage means. Things become personal for Nine when she starts getting letters addressed to her at the police station. They are her old school artworks and on the back of each the same message wrote in red that is being carved on the bodies. When they finally fine something that links the victims together it ends up being Nine's high school crush.
Jake Westerly runs a vineyard and bed and breakfest with his father and brother. He went though school with Nine. As teenagers they had a fling. But things happened that drove them apart. When Nine arrives to question Jake about the killings he finds himself still attracted to her. Nine belives Jake has nothing to do with the killings and agrees to let him help her look into things. Nine doesn't want to belive Jake has anything to do with the killings. She finds that she is still as attracted to Jake now as much as when they were teenagers. Now that this sadistic killer has his sights set on Nine, Jake will have to earn her trust in order to keep her safe.
Ms Bush brings us a action packed story. You will not be able to put down this book until you finish it. With the nail biting suspense and the romance will keep you up all night reading. This is a book not to be missed.

I wasn't to sure about this one when I started. Seemed to drag a bit at the first but the pace picked up and was well worth sticking until the end. This one will have you guessing until the end.

Detective September “Nine” Rafferty is new to the Laurelton Police Department and she is now in charge of the “Do Unto Others” case. The big question is did the murders start when she started her new job in Laurelton, or because she started her new job in Laurelton. As Nine and her partner interview friends and acquaintances of the murdered women, the facts keep coming circling back to Nine and her youth. September doesn’t know if she’s paranoid or if the killer really does have something to do with her own past and is she just a catalyst or a future target?

When her former high school love, Jake Westerly’s name keeps coming up, she knows she will have to speak to him about the murdered women, but just seeing Jake stirs up old feelings in Nine and she just can’t be thinking about that now, not when Jake is on a short list of those who knew the women.

Lover or murder? September needs to work fast to find the murderer, or she might find that she lost her heart to a killer.

I am definitely going to be keeping my eye out for more Nancy Bush novels. I was again drawn in to the story and the characters and spent a lot of time going back and forth with “It’s him—No, it’s him!” Although I will say that I was drawn to Auggie and Liz a little bit more in Nowhere to Run, but Nowhere to Hide is a great follow up story to the case begun in Nowhere to Run.

If you enjoy thrillers, add Nancy Bush to your list of authors to check out!

I received this book in a Goodreads First Reads giveaway. This novel is a great mix of mystery, suspense and romance. Detective September Rafferty and her partner, Gretchen Sandler, are in pursuit of a serial killer who carves the message "Do unto others" into the flesh of his victims. September or Nine, as she is known to her friends, comes to realize that she is the ultimate victim that the killer is seeking. September must work through a quandry of problems, including a highly dysfunctional family and Jake Westerly, a classmate whose name comes up in the investigation as a possible suspect.
Thank you Goodreads and Kensington Books for the gift of this book.

I'm not even finished with this book and I'm totally frusrated. The idea and story line is great but the author skips around and leaves out so much its ridiculous. Some of the best parts of the book she comletely leaves the reader in the dark, like easing about September finding this note tha caused her mother's death. It's a build up, then she just casually mentions this big fight about it....thats it! No scene ....nothing! Irritating. And the main character, weak. So so weak, has no mind or apparent willpower of her own. I was really, really disappointed in this book.

This is the second book about the Rafferty family and centers around September Rafferty also known by her nickname Nine. September and her twin, August, are both police officers and when September is assigned her first big case, it seems as if the killer is targeting her. Nancy Bush's novels are well written and keep you turning pages until you get to the end. I can't wait for the next one involving the Rafferty family.

I liked the characters in the book...especially the main character September Rafferty...her nick name is Nine...pretty cool...I like her family too...they all have names that are months...

The story line is original and different...do not remember another storyline like this one...my only complaint was that I felt like I was reading forever...for whatever reason, I feel like the text was very wordy...but overall I really did like the story.

This is the second Nancy Bush book I've read and I don't plan to ever read another book by her again!

Spoiler below:

This book is a continuation from Nowhere to Run. I happen to read Nowhere to Run by chance and kind of felt like I had to read this one to get closure on the story but ugh, it's honestly such a frustrating read. In both books, the main character is a female lead that is supposedly a strong woman, but both of them act like completely brainless retards and always need a man who's smarter to come save them. In the last one where the main character was Liv, I gave it a pass because Liv clearly had trauma that didn't allow her to think too clearly and also Liv is not a trained police officer. I thought this one would be better since September/Nine is a trained police officer (even though in the last book she acted like a complete idiot who has no idea how to solve a crime except to constantly yell at her brother). It seems like for this author, she knows of no other way to create real suspense without making the main character have cancerous stupidity that puts them in completely unnecessary danger.

Detective September Rafferty (known as "Nine") has become the target of a serial killer who seems to be someone from her distant past. Called the “Do unto others…” killer, he carves the words into his victims flesh. September’s investigation leads to her old classmate, Jake Westerly, also her first love. Can he be involved?? And there is her family, haunted by the murder of her sister and death of her mother in a car accident. Somehow, they are enmeshed in this also.

First, I’m not a fan of romantic mystery. My local book store owner recommended this because I read many of the same authors as the lady who told them about Nancy Bush. This book was too long. It repeated the same information over and over. There was gratuitous violence against women. The heroine could not have an adult sexual relationship because of the romance formula. The romance did not move the story forward. It bogged it down.

I couldn't stick with it. It was so slow with a lot of names and characters to remember. It was realistic in the way that investigative police work is...mind numbing. I like a fictitious story that has more action and suspense. I don't do well with MC's in law enforcement, acting like they're invincible and keeping things to themselves. I was begging in my mind for the FBI to be involved in hopes that the story would move along and the investigative work would be done better. DNF

An okay read which is second in a series, but fine as a stand alone. A lot of the authors books are in series. Another sick, twisted psycho after young women in a story tied in with a very dysfunctional family with the children’s names as months, March, May, July, August and September, with a potential January . The ending definitely lead the way for another story in mind. Lots of twisted and sick scenes from the killer, in case that is not your type of story.

This was the book that got me into reading . I read it after getting it from a thrift store for some reason . I was about 10 -11 , Now that I think back I realize that the main character is really weak but I didn't realize that back then so I thought adult Mystery was my go to genre . Now I know I like middle grade and YA fantasy like most kids my age . I'm only giving it 3 stars because it is what got me into reading .

The characters' relationships and motivations grated on me. In both this one and the first one, the male love interest ignores the female main character's verbal objection the first time they have sex (and both times she ends up loving it, of course, and completely falling for him, of course). Too problematic. And, for someone who supposedly earned her detective's shield, Nine is a really stupid cop. Done with this series and this author.

A good story. Detective September Rafferty is involved in trying to solve a crime that has a serial killer killing women and carving a message on their body. She also seems to be targeted by the killer who sends messages to her at the police station. Jake Westerly - a childhood special friend - reunites with September and helps solve the crime.

A very good suspense story with a little romance thrown in on the side. At first I thought the names of some of the characters was silly; however, I decided I liked the author's choice because it makes the series more memorable. There are enough twists and turns to keep things interesting.

Interesting and disturbing. Nine’s character is a bit immature for her age and profession. Her quick relationship with Jake after what he did in high school was not believable. He was a jerk. This relationship did not feel real tome.

Another really good read in Rafferty Family line. I wish there had been more resolution of the killer beyond he's dead. But still it's a good read and it kept me guessing.
