Knowledge of chromosome biology at the molecular and physical level is maturing and providing solutions to fundamental biological problems. The first complete eukaryotic chomosome has been sequenced and the chromosome of E. coli will soon follow. Chromosome organization in bacteria, fungi, plants and animals is being increasingly understood throughout the cell and life cycle of these organisms through the use of new techniques both in vivo and in vitro.
