I got this book as a gift (bc I loved Brooke) at age 7. It was probably my favorite book to look at when I was a kid. She is just about the exact same age as I am, I used to think she was literally perfect! She is stunning. I disagree that it was made more for the grown men who want to see these photos, but actually had a big influence over me as a young girl. People used to say we looked alike when I was young. I have no idea what happened to this awesome book. Haven't seen it in 30 years but I wish I still had it. I just thought about it today and went to ebay to see if I could get another copy, and found it was going for 200!

This book would never have been allowed to be published today and has become a rarity, possibly because many of the photos sexualize Brooke Shields when she was a young girl. Even the cover seems meant to be provocative. The interior photos are far worse, although there is no nudity (close but not quite full nudity)

Even so, there is no getting around the fact that there are plenty of photos of a very young Brooke Shields posing provocatively. Reading the very honest book written by Shields “There Was a Little Girl “ goes a long way in filling in the details of her early life: an alcoholic mother determined to make her child a star, a child who needed to financially support the family and was codependent on her mother.

Her mother did indeed make Brooke famous enough to be deemed “the face of the 80s”, landing on the cover of Time magazine. She also achieved fame for starring in movies : The Blue Lagoon, Pretty Baby and Endless Love. Of course her stunning beauty played an undeniable part, eerily lining up with her mother’s ambitions.

The 2 star review of this book represents absolutely no negative judgement of Brooke Shields. She has, in fact seemed to have somehow survived the significant challenges of her early life and moved on to a far more normal life- graduating from Princeton, getting married, having children, starting businesses, etc.

I just can’t give a positive review to a book which so clearly sexualizes a child.
