34th Book of 2023

Living in Navi Mumbai and Mumbai, there has been multiple times I have spotted Nigerian citizens in local train and other public places. There’re always some assumptions about them and we don’t take a second to pass judgments against them. Secretly, everyone of us wish to know how they are in India and what do they exactly do to survive or live in our city. Thankfully, I got my hands upon this book named “The Nigerian Mafia- Mumbai” written by Onyeka Nwelue who is a Nigerian filmmaker, publisher, talk-show host, bookseller, author and an Academic Visitor and founder of the James Currey Society, at the African Studies Centre, University of Oxford.

As the author is himself from Nigeria, he has been able to provide us specific details on the life of a Nigerian who has left his home to be in a new country and start from zero amidst all the struggles and chaos he has to go through. Onyeka has used the character of Uche to describe why the protagonist left his country and how he is trying to survive in India in its most fancy city- Mumbai.

The book is written in a very easy language which can be understood even by the beginners. I was quite unsure about the language initially as the author belongs to a foreign land where English is not prominently spoken hence the citizens lack the fluency. Surprisingly, Onyeka does great justice to the primary language he chose to write his story. He has also tried to maintain the flavor of Nigerian accent by ensuring that the same is scribbled in the conversations where certain characters are involved. Initially, I found difficult reading and understanding it but once I understood the purpose, it became easy to read the same.

Nwelue’s has a great potential in narrating the story as he is able to convince us about multiple sub plots and the kind of situations the characters have to go through. We are able to comprehend the arc of the characters and their changing priorities with the passing time in a city like Bandra where they get the difficult opportunities to survive but on the risk of getting caught at any point of time. How a local actor moves to Mumbai for becoming a Bollywood actor but ends up becoming a drug dealer – even a pimp – and indulges in other criminal activities as well. While reading the whole scenario from the perspective of a Nigerian, a reader is able to empathize with them completely.

In the pre-climax, author brings a twist and reveals what exactly happened with Uche before leaving for India. I read that part twice. The convincing factor in the author’s writing makes you believe even those sections where the possibility of it seems very fictional. Obviously, the book is a fictional attempt but the way it’s written makes it sound like an autobiography. I liked how author has justified the rawness of all the locales he has based his story in such as Bandra, Mumbai, Nigerian cities etc. One can easily imagine the whole ambience of the place where the character is regularly on a run for survival.

The romantic angle in the story is given a small place which gives a different perspective of the character but the confusion and uncertainty of the same makes it a separate but integral part of the tale. The book also takes us through how even fellow Nigerians doesn’t support each other due to their own caste system where there’s a lot of superiority complex in the ones who belong to the higher community. It speaks of other aspects of Nigeria as well.

Overall, the book is a compelling read which makes you keep turning pages until you finish it. It tempts you in believing that there’s something more sensational about to happen in the next chapter. Author has made the reading experience very easy and interesting. I give the book 3.75* out of 5. I am looking forward to read more work from the author in future.

Thanks!

I live in an area in Mumbai, wherein there is a predominating Nigerian community, which has been constantly increasing for the past couple of years (My area is also mentioned in the book if anyone wants to take a guess). Sometimes when I come across Nigerians, I look at the ladies in awe; for their physique, their braided hairstyle, the way they speak Hindi, their heavy and strange voice, or the way they walk without giving a damn to the stares they get. Whereas, whenever the men pass by, a strange kind of fear strikes my mind, don’t know why. Is it their voice, their tall and dark features? But, after I read “The Nigerian Mafia - Mumbai” I feel for them, for the mistreatment they must have met, for being misunderstood, and for their hardships.

Coming to the story, “The Nigerian Mafia – Mumbai” by Onyeka Nwelue is the story of Uche, a well-known child actor in Nigeria. He comes to Mumbai to buy fabrics which he plans to sell back in his hometown and make some money. But as fate intervenes, he ends up selling drugs and getting trapped in the underworld.

Well, after reading the book, I got mixed reactions. Neither I liked it very much nor I hated it. (I will explain the reasons below for the same).

Points I liked :

I loved the simplicity of the language used. It is very simple and easy to understand, with no heavy use of language which is a major plus point of the author. I loved the way the author made a cameo appearance in the story like a director does in any Bollywood movie that shows his love for Bollywood. How the author has traced the journey of Uche from his hometown to Bandra is worth a read. The characters are introduced as and when the story demands and exits accordingly. Each character plays their role without cluttering the plot.

I won’t say negative points as they are not but these points I found a bit hard to understand. If Uche was doing well in his hometown doing movies, he had earned well and had prospered, then why did he come to Mumbai to buy fabrics that he could sell after going back?

If you are a Mumbaikar, you will understand my following point one assaults a movie director (Abhinav), a detective (Charanjeet Singh), and an FFRO official in Mumbai and, he gets away, without any action from the system or even making it to headlines, and that too if you are a Nigerian, this fact is a bit difficult to digest for me as I am a born in Mumbai.

Having said all the above points I suggest this book is worth a read. It is an eye opener for all who think Mumbai is a city of dreams and anyone can become successful and earn money as soon as one lands here. It is, but the path you take decides your fate.

One must read this book once. Looking forward to reading the remaining parts of Uche’s journey.

The Nigerian Mafia by Onyeka Nwelue is a noir fictional story based in Mumbai. The MC narrates his life events and shares various episodes that have led to his current state.

The author takes the readers to a part of Mumbai that is filled with crime, murder, gang fights, drugs, prostitution, and sex rackets. He has depicted the contrast between dreams and reality honestly.

As the story unfolds, we learn about the struggles faced by African immigrants in India, the attitude of police and government officials, and their resolve to strive despite all odds. Nigerian mafia, social and class divide in Nigerian society, power play, and the resilience of Africans are well-depicted.

But I wonder why the author has shown Nigerians in such poor light. As an Own Voice author, he could have used this as an opportunity to break stereotypes and not depict them as drug peddlers, mules, or prostitutes.

The book is a work of Crime Action and I was looking for actual action, but what I got was an autobiography. Uche narrates his entire life story and, obviously, it isn’t the same as “watching” the events unfold in action.

The story is slow-paced and devoid of thrilling moments.

Despite the MC’s difficult life and struggles, I couldn’t empathise with him. His tone is off-putting. I didn’t like the manner in which the author insinuates that the reader is not quite intelligent and needs to be repeatedly reminded of past events.

I’ve always liked vernacular English in books written by native authors. However, the Pidgin English used here acted as a barrier.

Unfortunately, this book did not work well for me. The Nigerian Mafia was my second disappointing read this month. It seemed more like a newspaper account and less like a novel.

📍A story of an immigrant from Nigeria who lives in the slums of Mumbai and is forced to become a narcotics agent.

•• INSIGHT: The Nigerian Mafia Mumbai is a story of an immigrant who comes to Mumbai to fulfill his dreams of becoming a successful actor. How he comes into contact with the mafia and becomes a drug seller is what this story is all about.

•• REVIEW: The novel is all about how poverty and hunger can lead you to wrong paths and how you are responsible for all your wrongdoings. The book is being narrated from the jail and the protagonist is telling all the incidents in the form of flashbacks which were portrayed well. However, chronology was not set because of which it was confusing too. There is a lot of scope of improvement in the book. However, full marks to the author for the efforts.

•• STRENGTH: 1. The plight of the immigrants was very beautifully shown in the book.
2. There was a certain flow to the story which made the reading experience good.
3. The cover page has been thoughtfully designed which gives the vibe of it being a crime thriller.
4. The writing style of the author was fresh and welcoming.

•• WEAKNESS: 1. The climax of the story was not that powerful.
2. Nigerian English used in the book was very confusing to understand.
3. Different timelines made the storyline hard to connect.
4. There were a lot of incidents which were unnecessary for the plot and were given in a detailed manner.

•• TARGET READERS: New readers having an affinity towards mafia stories can give this book a try.

•• GENRE: Fiction-Crime

The story conveys Uche's aspirations and challenges with utmost authenticity. His journey from Lagos to Mumbai in the pursuit of stardom, unfolds as a powerful narrative of ambition, resilience, and the emotional aspect of chasing one's dreams.
The mystic entry of Periwinkle into Uche's life adds an element of intrigue. The emotional interplay between the characters is portrayed with a detailed finesse. It takes the story beyond a simple tale of ambition, thus transforming it into an exploration of human connections.
This aspect of the story heightens the emotional intensity, keeping readers engrossed in the characters' struggles. This compelling read left me with a profound reflection on the intricate weave of emotions that defines the human spirit.

DNF, so take my review with a grain of salt. This book starts off interesting, but I was immediately struck by how hard the story is to follow. A couple of times, the author jumps between the present and the thoughts of the narrator, but does so in a way that you don’t even know when you’ve gone back in time/we are in his thoughts or imagination, and when we’re in the present. He also seems to skip forward to the future, talking about a character as though he’s already met them, and then we meet them in a slight different way than what was just described. It’s hard to tell what is actually happening and what is just the author thinking. It’s definitely readable if you ignore all these errors and confusing points, the story still flows overall. It was just way too much to try and follow the story line by line, I might as well just read a summary.

Then I went on the author’s Wikipedia page to learn more about them and was appalled by the ‘controversies’ section, which has made me want to finish this book even less.

Overall, this story is interesting enough, but a chore to try and read.

This is a brilliant, gritty and honest read. I wanted to read it, as soon as I read the blurb. It is a clever blend of historical accuracy, culture and some of the dark, gritty truths of the life that has to be lived by the characters.
I found the book to be honest to the core. It gave an insight into a world that we could only begin to imagine what it might be like to live in a world similar to theirs.
I found the detail to be excellent. It really took you to the core of their world and life, bringing to life the world they are living in. I loved getting to see inside their lives and getting to know them. It was interesting to see how the main character had to change and grow to make it by in the world he was in and wanted to succeed in. Overall, this was an excellent and definitely unique book.

Mumbai's Intricate Tapestry of Desperation

Nwelue skillfully weaves an intricate tapestry of desperation in this book.

The feel of the book is like examining the fine threads that bind the characters to the city's relentless demands.

The author's unvarnished depiction of their struggles creates a narrative that is both heartbreaking and riveting.

After finishing, I was left with a profound appreciation for the author's ability to capture the nuances of life in Mumbai's underbelly.
