This book is for both English-speaking students who have studied Spanish for one or two years and Spanish-speaking students who want more practice in reading Spanish wile learning about their rich and varied Hispanic culture. It allows students to strengthen basic language skills. the content of each chapter contains a review of previously learned grammar and vocabulary and introduces new words — many of a literary nature — and more advanced grammatical concepts. Side glosses provide explanations to the text and help to increase vocabulary. A helpful Spanish-English Vocabulary is found at the end of the book. Following each legend are exercises; some text compression, some build vocabulary, and others are just for fun. The 16 legends in the book are arranged in chronological order, set in most of Spain's provinces, and cover a time period of roughly one thousand years, beginning with the era of the conquest of Spain by the Moors, in the eight century, and ending with the close of the eighteenth century.
