"This book reveals the changing face of our industry and shows the importance of first principles combined with practical advice. Sales Promotion is essential reading for any practitioner." --Edwin Mutton, Director General, Institute of Sales Promotion
The book is more like a brief encyclopedia than a step-by-step guide. In general, the book is rather pointless, and not only because in the first chapters, the author writes about things that have little to do with the main topic. For example, the book starts with the chapter "The Purpose of Business Activity". And the chapters that follow are no better: "How to be creative", "How to use business partners", and so on. Chapter 6, "How to Research and Evaluate Promotional Campaigns," although seemingly important and interesting at first glance, is actually a rehash of a classic marketing textbook on the subject of marketing research. I would even say that the entire first part of the book consists of either little relevant details or what every marketer should know initially because it is contained in any classic marketing textbook.
As for the rest of the book, it is, as I said, a brief encyclopedia on sales promotion. The author lists all the methods of stimulation, gives a brief description of them, and as an illustration, offers various examples from real life. Here's a typical example. The title of the chapter is "Two Airline Tickets for the Price of One". Then there are three subtopics - "The Offer", "How the Offer Works" and "How to Choose the Right Offer". There is nothing of substance in this presentation of the material or in the material itself. All this is either self-evident or will be of interest only to those who want to repeat the same in (their) practical activity. But even in this case, the book will not give any tangible benefit. Any average marketer can come up with all of this. Therefore, despite the sound name of the subtopics, they are all rather mediocre. An exception may be the very list of possible methods of sales promotion with a brief description, just as a reminder. In this sense, the book deserves at least a neutral evaluation. In any case, you can safely get around without this book, especially if you have at hand the Internet. I think even that the Internet can give more information than this book.
It should also be noted that the examples given in the book are taken by the author from British business practice, so their relevance for non-EU countries is questionable. So we again come to the conclusion that the book can be useful only as a brief encyclopedia of possible sales promotion methods with a brief description of them.
Louisiana governor Huey Long, a populist and a demagogue, once said, “Let’s put the jam jar on the lower shelf where the little man can reach it.” Sales promotion does just that for ordinary shoppers. It lets people save money and shows off your product. Roddy Mullin and Julian Cummins know about sales promotion like Madonna knows about celebrity. In their new book, they expertly explain how sales promotion works, what it can accomplish and what common pitfalls to avoid. The book’s only drawback: It has a British bent that may deter readers in other countries. getAbstract suggests that any marketer who plans a sales promotion campaign without reading this book first should forever forfeit his or her “buy one, get one free” privileges.
