The legendary '4472' - better known as the Flying Scotsman - receives the famous Haynes Manual treatment with the full co-operation of the National Railway Museum. Here is a unique perspective on what is involved in maintaining, operating and restoring this Class A3 Pacific, the first steam locomotive to achieve 100mph. This highly detailed manual, based around 4472's recent overhaul and subsequent return to main-line operation, also looks in detail at every aspect of its engineering and construction, providing a feast of information and insight.
Published in 2016, the Haynes Flying Scotsman is a novelty owners manual, part of an immensely popular series of such printed in recent years. The format follows a familiar style, with the first half of the book devoted to the history of the subject, whilst the second half looks a the detail by making great use of excellent photos of the restoration and maintenance process. In this case, the pics of restoration are especially informative, due to the well documented major restoration works that have been carried out in recent years in which major items of the structure have been replaced with newly constructed items along with renovations of existing items. The history is interesting, although some of the stats seem a little dubious whilst the bits of technobabble are lost on me. Very informative, and more than just a novelty 'coffee table' book.
