I just didn't feel this really adds much to the canon of children's literature about transgender kids. It depicts a kid entirely at the mercy of his peers, teachers, parents, and Santa Claus to validate his gender -- not to mention the author, who misgenders the kid for half the book.
I'm annoyed because there are a bunch of weird grammar mistakes throughout this book which take away it's ability to seem authoritative. I'm also annoyed because it's just another retelling of the traditional binary transgender story. Maybe I'm super picky when it comes to this type of thing but I've read a lot of these types of children's books and when I see this story simply be regurgitated over and over again, it gets tiring. It gets especially tiring when I know that this simply is not every trans person's story, even of those who came out as children.
I suppose I would read this to my child if they had questions about transgender kids because it's one of the only options out there. But I hope by the time I have the opportunity to give my own kids books that there are more options instead of the traditional "I see a boy in the mirror" narratives.
The book is a bit simplistic, but it would do really well paired with other books about transgender children. Good use of repetition and transition to appropriate pronouns.
This book should NOT be read by anyone... BTW - THERE IS NO "gender dystopia" in children. This is a fantasy to forward the transgender movement and this DOCTOR... has nefarious ideas. Get your children psychological help and TALK to them.. GENDER is determined AT BIRTH... and if someone wants to change their gender, they do it as an ADULT...not by a crazed parent who is pressured by a small group of people who are unhappy they made the choices they did. This is atrocious!
