The uncertain nature of wildlife watching, as well as its moments of transcendence, is communicated beautifully in this thoughtful, peaceful story.

There are so many great elements here: patience, seeing whales as individuals, nonconsumptive enjoyment of nature, and recognition of the bond all beings share. The final page, when the girl in the story meets one whale up close, is especially memorable, as it ties together this theme of wonder and interconnectedness of all life.
