To help Church members study the scriptures, Author Daniel H. Ludlow has compiled this wonderful volume. Dr. Ludlow supplements his own insights into the four gospels with hundreds of quotations from the General Authorities of the Church. He also includes a section containing definitions of difficult terms to make understanding the scriptures as easy as possible. In addition, this section contains cross-references to the commentaries in this Companion, to the study aids in the Latter-day Saint edition of the King James Version of the Bible, and to the scriptures themselves. It also provides background and commentary for nearly every verse of the four gospels. Its many helpful features and the thousands of cross-references throughout the book make it an invaluable reference tool for every student and teacher of the gospel.
The basic scriptural text referred to by this book is the King James Version of the New Testament. Included are many scriptural cross references so if the reader has a question during his/her reading on a certain topic, or would like a definition of a word or term, he can turn to Section 1 of the book and read other scriptures covering that topic. It is helping me in my current New Testament study to better understand and appreciate the writings of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
The Ludlow companions are very helpful for LDS scriptorians. Ludlow has compiled interesting comments, quotes, and observations from various sources to compile a meaningful and authoritative commentary.
He draws on sources such as church manuals from BYU and sunday school classes, general conference talks, and books written by church authorities such as McConkie's New Testament commentary.
I recommend it to those who would like to learn interesting facts and gain perspective. However, Ludlow only provides commentary on those versus that he feels warranted. Therefore, this book may not be useful to someone who wants a long-winded verse by verse commentary that re-explains even the simplest passages.
As the Adult Gospel Doctrine teacher in my church, I find this book a valuable resource in my lesson preparation (notwithstanding the relationship I have the author - my grandfather). I recommend this to those who would like to gain additional insights into their New Testament study.
I read this commentary before each chapter of The Four Gospels in the New Testament. It gave me several insights I had not garnered in my previous readings.
