Tremendous. Wow. Very excited about the future of Unstuck. I look forward to reading their second issue. This one was jam packed with stories to be envious of. Lindsay Hunter was in fine form, as always. As was J. Robert Lennon and as was Matthew Derby. I particularly enjoyed Judson Merrill's "Inside Out." I'll be keeping an eye out for more by him, though his novella "The Pool" has been in my periphery for a while now. Oh, and I'd be remiss not to mention Julia Whicker, whose "Wonderblood" is perhaps one of the scarier visions of a post-apocalyptic future I've as yet encountered. Tremendous, I say again.
"We emphasize stories, poems, and even essays with elements of the fantastic, the futuristic, the surreal, and the strange. In our pages, you'll find everything from straight-up science fiction and fantasy to domestic realism with a twist of the improbable."...
I think because Unstuck aims to accept anything with even a slight bit of surrealism/sf/f/etc, this volume to me felt a little random, not very focused. But Unstuck has sourced pieces from some great writers, so it was a pretty interesting read, overall. 3.5
A couple weeks after reading this, these are the three that have stuck in my mind:
"R" by Helen Phillips "The Eel" by Rennie Sparks "Wonderblood" by Julia Whicker
