Frederick Mathews was starting a new school. He had been kicked out of his private school for poor grades and a smart mouth attitude with the teachers, as well as problems with other students, and now one public school for the same reasons. By the end of the week, he is in trouble at school, and he is about to be killed by a street gang.
Since there really isn't much in the way of a product description on this book, I guess I'll start with that.
Mangled Noize is the first installment in a series of (so far) three books. It revolves around Frederick and his mischief friends who come together and form a band called.. surprisingly.. Mangled Noize :) Although the very beginning is a bit of a back-story on Fred, most of the book is focused on the life of music, touring, drugs and alcohol, horizontal mambo and all the rest of the good life of the Rock 'n' Roll world. And it entirely this story that kept me going and wanting to read more.
At roughly 270 pages, it was a quick read, but a very strange one. I don't know what it is, but Williams' writing style bothers me quite a lot. It is very disjointed.. childish even. The storyline never really flows, but is rather just an endless string of individual sentences that don't quite connect with each other. The overall impression of the book (although it is far from being that bad) is that every single sentence starts with "-Name- does this..." "Then -Name- does that..." and so forth. Some might say that is to be expected from a first-time effort, but perhaps he could simply do with a writing class or two.
The major plus, as I say, is the story behind the writing, and the music therein. I love music and the story is good, and I think I'll want to buy the other two books as well. Perhaps the writing will improve before it's all finished :)
