Fetching Jonas Blake

Rate this book
“The last time I saw Jonas Blake, he was walking away from me, proudly showing me his back after I’d entreated him countless times to stay.”

Anne Summerton has a problem. She and her siblings – one a proper lady and the other a disabled adventurer – are on the verge of losing their family’s farm to the cunning Will Norrington, a man taking advantage of the women and widows in their quaint Virginia town. With many of the men gone to fight the redcoats in the war, Anne doesn’t have a man to help her protect what is rightfully hers. She is a young woman alone in a man’s world.

Fetching Jonas Blake chronicles Anne’s story as she and her siblings brave the trying times of the Revolutionary War without their parents’ protection. Anne is forced to rely on her fierce, independent spirit to make it through – but it isn’t enough to keep Norrington away. After the county magistrate fails to take Anne seriously, her only hope lies in brave militia captain Jonas Blake, who left the farm years ago and has plenty of reasons to stay away.

With nobody else to turn to, Anne and her siblings must make the dangerous ride south to find Jonas. After various missteps, wrong directions, and numerous surprises, they find his militia camp. But will he help them?

Personally, I have found very few historical fiction novels to interest me. This one was definitely an exception. The characters were so well-developed and relatable that you felt yourself drawn into their stories and struggles. The setting was well established: you could see yourself there with them. This book drew me right in and I didn't want to leave. I hope to see more from this author. This book was appropriate for YA and adult readers.

I loved this book! The main character had such a funny, unique voice and had flaws and passions that gave her an interesting complexity. It reminded me of the heroines in Shannon Hale's books - girls who are constrained by society in some way, but still manage to use their talents to do amazing things. The historcial aspects of it were really well-researched and fascinating. I'm looking forward to the sequel!

I love a good historical fiction...almost as much as I love a sassy, brave, and endearing heroine. I found both in Fetching Jonas Blake. I think readers will be able to relate to Anne's (the main character) struggles and fears. I found myself cheering her on as she grew closer to God and found her way back to Jonas Blake (where she belongs!). I also loved the attention to historical details as well. Looking forward to more from this author!

Good message, clean, romantic historical adventure. Fun for adults, but certainly suitable for 13 and up.

Very well-written, great historical fiction piece, swoon-worthy romance, spunky strong female heroine. My 10 year-old loved it, too! Completely clean for the YA set.
