Simple Strategies That Work! Helpful Hints for Educators of Students with AS, High-functioning Autism and Related Disabilities by Brenda Smith Myles

Rate this book
Children and youth with Asperger Syndrome, high-functioning autism (HFA), and pervasive developmental disorders-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), and related exceptionalities have great potential, but all too often their abilities are not realized. "Simple Strategies that Work!" provides ideas and suggestions that teachers can use to help a student with AS/HFA on the road to success. The book discusses problems that arise in the classroom and how teachers can adjust the classroom to accommodate, while not interfering with normal classroom routines. Not bogged down with jargon, the book includes tables and boxes for quick reference and clear meaning. Also included is information on what can cause anxiety for the AS/HFA student, how this can lead to decreased academic and social performance, decreased attention to task, and potential increases in behavior problems, and what the teacher can do to assist.

An excellent primer for practical strategies. It's a great introductory resource for any educator working with students on the autism spectrum. It is a valuable resource because it is simple and accessible. It's blissfully brief, cuts out the academic jargon, and gets right to the point with helpful, easy-to-implement suggestions that make a tangible difference in the classroom.

This is a nice resource to utilize at the high school level even!

Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!

This is a great guide which will be useful in instructing others in working with children with AS. It has simple strategies and clearly outlined ideas for avoiding meltdowns and improving interaction with others as well as tips on how to set up a visual routine. Can be applied to most school age levels. I will probably make copies of some of the sections.

Easy to read, easy to find information, this is an excellent book to share with teachers or with any adults who work with children diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. Explains sensory issues as well as the Asperger's behaviors that typically baffle everyone around them. Brenda Myles Smith really "gets" Asperger's Syndrome!

I was given a few photocopies out of this book by the school when my child was diagnosed. Much of it is stuff we had already figured out... but it is VERY helpfull to have on hand when guiding others in dealing with my child.
