Everyone who works with textiles understands the importance of mastering fundamental techniques. And everyone has experienced the excitement of coming across a new idea. Yet putting art and craft together--the creative act--can seem intimidating. Now two expert artists and teachers share their insights about how to turn ideas into designs, and designs into beautiful finished textile art. They offer advice on choosing fabrics, layering, creating texture, embellishment, edges, finishes, and all the key techniques.
A fantastic source book for those of us who want to develop ideas and skills in textile art. Clearly written, beautifully illustrated and straightforward to read. Thanks to the authors.
How To Be Creative in Textile Art explains in the introduction that most people start textile projects with the end goal in mind, and work purposefully towards that vision. I mainly do that in my pieces, so working creatively in the moment and going with the flow is something I wanted to learn how to do. This book gives a good structure - there's some planning and design steps before the actual making stages so you can still plan but also embrace the process and freestyle during the making phase. It definitely got me thinking of things I wanted to try in my hand embroidery.
This is an older book but, it is wonderful in that there is enough information related t dying and how to lay out a piece of textile art. Some of the information I may use, other not so sure. I do love the idea of keeping a sketch book. Often I will have ideas and forget about them, this will help me to develop the idea and perhaps see it through. Very good info for beginning and finishing a textile piece.
