The Unvarnished Gospels

Rate this book
This contemporary literary translation of the Gospels will give readers a remarkable new perspective on the Gospels, a feel for them that is very much like the experience of reading the original Greek in all its simplicity and conversational style. By contrast, other translations interpret the Greek through church dogmas that arose centuries after the original texts. In this edition a glossary elucidates the original meanings of key words and compares them with their conventional translations.

Really tried to like it as the bible in general is crying out for a good vernacular translation. Sadly, this isn't it. Only got as far as Matthew 6 when Jesus announced you had to choose between serving God and "the Almighty Dollar". At that point it just felt like I was in the hands of a translator who's was going to have Christ say things like "Dig it!" & "Sin sucks!" And really, hasn't He suffered enough?

What a different experience reading the gospels as continuous narratives, and in comprehensible language! This translation seems to allow the mysticism of the Spirit to speak for itself, rather than attempting to imbue it with a sense of forced sacredness by using words rarely found outside of theological texts. I will definitely be keeping this on my shelf and revisiting from time to time.
