Christian Faith at the Crossroads takes readers on a carefully guided tour of four hundred years of modern religious history. Lloyd Geering has crafted illuminating cameo sketches of the impact of dozens of thinkers and movements on the evolution of the Christian faith following the Remaissance and Reformation. He traces the influence of the empirical sciences on religion beginning with Copernicus and Galileo; he analyzes the effect of the rise of sociology, and assesses the revolution in psychology initiated by Freud and Jung. He shows how historical self-consciousness has altered our sense of the past. For those who want to participate in the current debate about the future of the faith, it is an indispensable guide.
Sir Lloyd George Geering ONZ GNZM CBE is a New Zealand theologian who faced charges of heresy in 1967 for his controversial views. He considers Christian and Muslim fundamentalism to be "social evils". Geering is Emeritus Professor of Religious Studies at Victoria University of Wellington. He turned 100 in February 2018.
I always enjoy Lloyd Geering's books even when they are difficult to understand fully. I especially liked the chapter entitled 'Why Did Secularization Come Out of the West?' The Jewish faith has had such an extensive influence because 'it has had the capacity to be more in touch with the reality of the human predicament'. The five points listed were right on target. I will read more of Lloyd Geering.
