This was a 'meh' kinda book. As a story it was entertaining enough but it all just seemed really shallow and without meaning - the book did have a big message, as portrayed in the titled, which is basically just 'live life in the moment because a bus could run you over any day' aka live every day like your last. I just didn't feel as if the message had a deep - or any - affect.
The story centers around Connor, the main character, and he and his friends' life with drugs and being in Ibiza as he tries to find his Big Adventure (soulmate essentially). Like I said before, it was entertaining enough but it just didn't leave any type of impact on the reader.
The end of the book was the worst for me. It just seemed like the author quickly chucked a few things in so it'd all wrap up nicely. I feel like the epilogue in this book shouldn't've been a happily ever after where after all the chaos everything is now perfect and they'll never have problems again la-di-da. A better option would've been with the epilogue being with all the characters on their way to achieving what they did in the actual epilogue, not already there. It has the same issue as the Harry Potter's nineteen years later - it would've been better to show that most of the struggle was over and that they were slowly working towards a better life rather than suddenly having no problems.
I bought this book in a charity shop when I was about 19 and I never even made it to Ibiza. The main character DJ was getting up to mischief with drugs and bondage, shame it was written by someone who didn't know the first thing about drugs or bondage and I was a 19 year old in a small town. I found it somewhat amusing but the writing was so bad it constsntly broke my immersion and I couldn't finish it.
This is OK - does what it says on the tin and a bit like beans on toast. Its a comedic romp, set in Ibiza with some strong charaterisations as the main character struggles with the choices to sell out to the man or follow his dreams of music, drugs, girls and the big adventure.
A number of set pieces that are a bit convultued drive the narrative. It starts with Connor filiming himself with his girlfriend, only for her head to get stuck in the headboard and him disappearing for a few hours when he is on the rescue and is offered a spliff. They spilt as a result, her brothers are major drug dealers and in the confusion, he ends up with a kilo of what they think is cocaine in his video. Which he then lends to mates.
He is forced to follow his friends to recover the drugs. Tied in with this is his career - he is doing well having turned his back on the hedonistic lifestyle and is on the brink of greatness as a recruitment consultant. His unexpected trip puts this into focus and what he wants out of life. This is very well put together.
He follows his mates and a number of adventures evolve, including meeting ex girlfriends, a dying friend that puts his life decisions in focus and some set pieces to add in the humour.
Great book loved it! Honestly if you ever want a book to read on holiday this is it! Great story and plot couldn't put it down, read rumours that there making it a film and I really hope they do!
