November 26, 2025Abductions” by Peter Brookesmith is a solid, level-headed 1980s overview of the early alien abduction phenomenon, drawing heavily on cases like Betty and Barney Hill, Travis Walton, and the emerging wave of hypnotic regressions popularised by Budd Hopkins.
While it leans toward belief and treats experiencers’ stories with respect, it avoids the wilder conspiratorial tangents that later dominated the genre, making it a surprisingly restrained time capsule of the topic before it spiraled into full X-Files territory.
If you’re curious about where the modern abduction narrative began without wading through decades of increasingly unhinged additions, this is still one of the clearer starting points.

Mu interesante libro de Peter Brookesmith sobre el moderno fenómeno de las abducciónes extraterrestres, que ni es tan nuevo y que lo más probable es que ni siquiera sean extraterrestres.
No es un libro complaciente para los fans irreflexivos del fenómeno ovni que están convencidos que su procedencia es de otros mundos, porque ilumina el fenómeno desde diferentes puntos que van desde lo psicológico a lo mítico : ¿ estamos frente a un fenómeno psicosocial que hace uso de ciertas estructuras mitológicas modernas para poder liderar con el mundo actual?
En especial comparto desde hace años con Brookesmith parte de sus posturas, sin embargo también había visto un elemento interesante que también señala aquí, pero muy brevemente: el fenómeno parece concentrarse en demasía en la población blanca occidental. Será que no tengo acceso a mucha literatura de este tipo de países asiática o africanos, pero por ejemplo, en México aunque hay "contactados" no hay ni por asomo tanta cantidad ni casos emblemático tan importantes como los gringos. Y el de Narciso Genovese no cuenta porque obviamente siempre fue un fraude.
