Dlouho očekávaná monografie Decadence Now! Za hranicí krajnosti vychází jako součást stejnojmenné výstavy vy výjimečné grafické úpravě Roberta V. Nováka. Přináší na 338 stranách vedle úvodní studie i komentáře k jednotlivým dílům.
Dekadence je téma, které je v současné kultuře aktuální, či lépe, opět aktuální. Apokalyptický pocit zmaru a krize naší civilizace podněcuje zvýšený zájem o temnou stránku lidského nitra i samotného světa. Od sedmdesátých let 20. století můžeme sledovat kontinuální snahu soudobého umění pracovat s typicky dekadentní tematikou: odcizení, deviace, splín, perverze, hrůza, ošklivost, krása, halucinace, smrt, sebevražda, zánik, narcismus, pornografie, násilí, narkotika, nemoc, šílenství. Dekadentní umění je subversivní, podněcující, nevyvolává lhostejnost, ale vyžaduje formulování jasného postoje. Dekadence je v tomto smyslu vyhrocená, extrémní i provokativní.

Po úvodní studii je publikace strukturována, podobně jako výstava, do pěti základních kapitol: I. Krajnost sebe: bolest (Robert Mapplethorpe, Pierre et Gilles, Matthew Barney, Cindy Shermanová, Gilbert and George, Yasumasa Morimura ad.), II. Krajnost těla: sex (Jeff Koons, Niba, Anders Serrano, Joel-Peter Witkin, David Černý ad.), III. Krajnost krásy: pop (David LaChapelle, Pierre et Gilles, Paolo Schmidlin, Shimon Oksteyn, Daniel Edwards, Zbygniew Libera ad.), IV. Krajnost mysli: šílenstí (Damien Hirst, David Baley, Catherine Opieová, Jake a Dinos Chapmanovi, Gottfried Helnwein ad.) V. Krajnost života: smrt (Steven Gregory, Joel-Peter Witkin, Kieth Haring, Ivan Pinkava, Václav Jirásek ad.). Kniha obsahuje, vedle menších referenčních obrázků, celostránkové reprodukce všech děl, která byla představena na stejnojmenné výstavě v Galerii Rudolfinum, stejně jako pohledy do vlastní expozice. Jednotlivá díla jsou doprovázena komentáři samotných autorů nebo úryvky z teoretických studií a rozhovorů. Publikace je doplněna podrobným biografickým a bibliografickým oddílem.

I got this by mistake; I meant to order this author's book on an earlier period of Decadence (Victorian and Edwardian art movement). It was still interesting, although there isn't a great deal of art from this camp that I care greatly for (Helnwein's anti-war paintings, some black and white photography).

I found the written commentary on intentionality more intriguing than most of the pieces themselves, which seem too often to emphasize transgression for transgressions sake without conveying additional ideology or having aesthetic interest. Why so many images of fat and/or ugly people doing sex things? Surely it's not really shocking, especially given all the fat Baroque nudes. Becausse they have whips and chains? Maybe growing up in San Francisco just desensitized me to this kind of image.

There is a preliminary essay which includes some interesting discussion points. My attention was especially caught by a comment on the value of controversy, because I think this may be something we are losing in the current character-limited emotive discourse of social media, which seems to lean more to condemnation than debate. On which note to end -- read it for yourself, don't take my non-expert opinion!
