Rekindling Inner Fire

Early Will I Seek You

Rate this book
Writings that touch the pure-flaming heart of God...from the men and women who walked with Him through the ages...guiding into a deeper friendship with the "Father of Lights."How can I know God? How can I find His purpose for me, in all of life's tangled ways? How do I break through to Him in prayer, when my way seems blocked? These pressing questions, common to so many, sent Augustine on his own spiritual journey toward the heart of God. The secret joys he found along the way can be yours as you walk the trail he blazed in spirit.Among the best-loved of all Christian expositors, Augustine (354-430 A.D.) struggled to find the true path to God, amid heresy and threats of persecution and destruction. Yet in all his works there shines a heart set on one goal--to become a friend to God, and Him alone. His written words, treasured for centuries, are footprints to be followed to the kind of life that finds God. Ever present. Strong. Life-changing. And loving at all times.

Reflections from the writings of Augustine, but heavily edited by David Hazard, which decreased their impact. I generally dislike making spiritual classics “more readable” and this is no exception. I keep wondering, “How exactly did Augustine really say it?” But many good insights, nonetheless.

I enjoy the writings of the early Christian thinkers, but often they can be challenging to sift through their writing styles to embrace the essence of the truths that they are meditating upon.
In this book, David Hazard has done that sifting for us!! The essence of the homilies and other writings of Augustine is put in plain language that the modern reader can easily chew on and digest, embracing them for their own faith journey! This 40 Day journey with Augustine has been a pure delight, even when his words have pricked my soul with conviction. I have tagged the readings that I will need to return to and meditate upon and commune with God over. This is a blessed treasure for the spiritual journey of the 21st century believer. I am thankful I came across it, and look forward to gaining access to other offerings in this series.

Not great, not terrible. Hazard presents Augustine in his (Hazard's) own phrasing, which is kind of frustrating, and the sections are so short that any kind of flow or context is precluded. Reading this book makes me want to actually read Augustine for myself, instead of a paraphrase. Which, if that is Hazard's goal, then well done. The sections are certainly short, so if you're looking for a devotional that's like two pages per day, well, this is that. But I think there are meatier, more challenging devotionals (My Utmost for His Highest and Morning and Evening, to name just two).

All in all, sort of . . . meh. Which is not a quality often attributed to Augustine, so I am determined not to hold it against him. I expect I will feel very differently when I read him in context.

This is probably the fourth or fifth time I've read this particular devotional, but my first time through with my girls.

Such richness! This morning we will read and discuss day 40. Anticipation for the sharing, bittersweet in wrapping it up.

Until we return, then. Farewell for now, Augustine.
