Although this wasn't quite what I was expecting, it still was helpful. From the title, I was expecting a more in depth explanation of what research actually says about teaching spelling in the classroom, proving that these strategies are better than the "flavor of the month" ideas. It mainly was about how to use your word wall to teach spelling, offering a helpful list as a starting point. These words are used as guides to write other, similiar words. It makes a lot of sense to me and would probably really help my students in their journal writing.
However, my district requires a spelling grade and my gradebook is open online to parents. I would've appreciated ideas on ways to get grades without weekly spelling tests and ways to calm parents' fears about not having weekly spelling tests (with only 5 new words introduced a week). I can see some real problems with getting parent support on this. I'm sure if I sit down and work it through, I can come up with something. It just would be nice to know what others have done to deal with these issues.
