Ahmad Nadeem Qasmi born Ahmad Shah Awan was an Urdu and English language Pakistani poet, journalist, literary critic, dramatist and short story author. He wrote 50 books on topics such as poetry, fiction, criticism, journalism and art, and was a major figure in contemporary Urdu literature. His poetry was distinguished by its humanism, and his Urdu afsanay (short stories) are considered second only to Prem Chand in its depiction of rural culture. He was also editor and publisher of the literary magazine Funoon for almost half a century. He received several awards such as the Pride of Performance in 1968, Sitara-e-Imtiaz in 1980 and Pakistan's highest literary award Kamal-e-Fun Award in 1998 for his literary works.
Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi never fails to touch the heart. He discusses very sensitive subjects with the cruel wisdom. Yes, I would say cruel because his concluding sentence of the story pierces through the heart, breaks it, makes it bleed and the wound is not healed.
Neela Pathar discusses some bitter realities of our society. It is the collection of the stories of the common people whose everyday problems are too many to list. Stories state some hard facts and presents the world as a barbaric place to survive.
Writer's point of views are hard to deny. However, with the lot of pessimism these stories do not make me feel good. They somehow annoy me. I agree with what J.R.R. Tolkein said "There is some good in this world, and it is worth fighting for." It irritates me that no story presents the idea that world can be a better place, may be tomorrow if not today. But every person grows with his own thoughts and has rationale to believe what he does. I am sure a person like Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi would have his reasons.
The story of Neela Pathar is set in a rural area, with beautiful depiction of village scenery, village life and the problems village people have to go through, just to live by. It shows true love of a mother, and the bond siblings have with each other, and how they protect their own. Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi's words and plots are awe-amazing.
