Read this in our Archival Re-imaginings course. First novel published by a Native American. A story of revenge--a once dignified citizen of Mexico abused by racism and systemic oppression in Gold Rush era California (land that was just recently taken from Mexico in the Mexican-American war; land where Americans, Native Americans, and Mexicans had interacted for hundreds of years prior to the "Yankees"). Working with/in/against imperalist nostalgia. It's never an eye for an eye with Murrieta--he has endured far worse than he ever inflicts on others--his moral character appears throughout--glimpses of his former self before the violence of the state turned him into a bandit.
