No Second Chance: A Reality-Based Guide to Self-Defense by Mark Hatmaker and Doug Werner

Rate this book
When violence becomes unavoidable, it's best to be informed, and this self-defense book provides revolutionary information that could mean the difference between life and death in the event of a physical assault. Included are drills to increase awareness, examples for using the environment as a self-defense tool, and methods that allow victims to best use their inherent strengths to repel an attack. An interesting look at the psychology of an attack—exploring the mindset of both attacker and victim, and illuminating the dynamic between the two—this manual puts the power back into the hands of concerned citizens.

Realistic, down to Earth, simple, all good ways of describing the ideal self-defense advice AND accurate descriptions of this pocket guide.

You could skim it in one hour. You could spend the rest of your life perfecting the physical and cognitive drills. Whats more, that effort would actually pay off. Completing the drills in this book should make you feel much more confident in yourself and having a confident posture makes you far less likely to ever be chosen as a target. That confidence would not be empty posturing either, he keeps his advice very simple, so you can actually remember it when the chips are down and all your kata go out the window.

I actually already knew everything and found it rather boring. There is copious filler, and there has to be to make it a book and not a pamphlet. I would prefer more, bigger, nicer pictures over all the unnecessary words.

I can confirm, as someone who was already doing all the cognitive drills and some variations of the physical, that even as a small female alone at night walking the inner city streets, no one has ever tried anything with me. I have never been attacked and I think it is because I am constantly hyper aware of my surroundings. When I have a purse it is shut tight and carried with a cross-body strap with one hand always resting on it. I am always in sensible shoes.

In short, I do recommend.

Excellent Read

This book caught me by surprise. The specific elements of criminology and horrific case studies combined will stick with me for a long time. This got me hooked enough though I read this in two days. Be forewarned they are gory but that's the point. From getting your mindset in order, to drills, to the hardcore self defense tactics that are the second half of the book, I consider this a great buy. The one star removal is for the pictures. Even zooming in on a tablet it is difficult to see them. The info is top notch and he doesn't waste words.
