Stress Management for Life: A Research-Based Experiential Approach

Rate this book
STRESS MANAGEMENT FOR LIFE: A RESEARCH-BASED EXPERIENTIAL APPROACH, THIRD EDITION emphasizes experiential learning and clearly explains the "how to" of stress management and prevention. Michael Olpin and Margie Hesson offer students more than just a book about stress; they offer students a life-changing experience. This text empowers students to experience personal wellness by understanding and managing stress. The authors encourage students to personalize the information in the text through practical applications and a "tool-box" of stress-reducing resources, including the stress relief audio files and student activities, both found on the CourseMate Website. Well-researched, this text gives stress-related topics a real-life context and helps motivate students to manage stress in a way that accommodates their lifestyle, values and goals.

I liked this textbook! I thought it was a little redundant and could have been condensed a lot but I think the information is interesting. If this info was made into a slideshow and shown to people it could help reduce stress in our society.

The first half of this textbook was actually research-based and up to date on most information. It provides psychological aspects and well researched, and well defined ideas that can be backed by research. My issue comes from the latter of the textbook where, when referring to a study done by Herbert Benson that meditation can help autism. What exactly does this mean? What is this exactly implying? Is Benson and the author saying that autism is an issue?

Furthermore, it has sexist and out dated concepts that are referred to, and talked as fact. For example: Olpin refers to the idea created by Gray Chapman, The Five Love Languages that is genuinely, a mere concept and can be placed upon the shelves of self-help books that are written by CEOs and business gurus that really have no place in a textbook revolving around research and psychology. Chapman's love languages perpetuates sexism, as in the original 1992 release, referred to a woman having struggles with her husband, to which Chapman states that she should stop nagging, and have sex with him once a week because that is his love language. Later editions of this book, of course, do not include this bit, but it should be under criticism regardless. Oplin should not introduce ideas that are not sound and present them as fact or have no inclusion of negative aspects of these ideas. He also includes and presents the book Men are from mars, women from Venus as factual evidence for communication styles, which that book was also published in 1992, and has been under fire for a good while, because it places human psychology into gendered stereotypes.

I have a bone to pick with Oplin. The research is half-baked and most ideas later introduced are not sound ideas, some research refers to decades ago, and considering the edition I read was published in 2021, there obviously needs to be some changes to fit into modern standards.

Used this book for a Stress Management class at MiraCosta College. Although we did not reference the book very often, there were some good references and tips I did get from the book.

Great insight in some aspects of the mind. It got a little hippish at the end but it had several concepts that made me reevaluate some ways in which I approach life.

Textbook for Health and Stress Management class - read from January 2010 to April 2010 - not bad. It was well-laid-out but I had problems accessing the free website.
