Almost a pro forma effort by today's standards, this early pseudonymous Martin Cruz Smith product reads almost like a screenplay for any version of James Bond one would wish to pick out. Brief, with steamy sex and technical descriptions padding out the plot, one rides along in the brief tradition of 1970s thrillers. A good diversion for a plane ride or a wait at the doctor's office.
Men's adventure series gets off to an inauspicious start, its intriguing concept (the Vatican's inquisitors serving as its espionage arm) barely explored. Action scenes are shoehorned in, whether they make sense or not, just because there had to be action scenes. Pseudonymous Martin Cruz Smith can and, of course, has done much better.
