Years ago, I found a remaindered copy of this one and read it. It’s one of the few books that I’ve read that has stuck with me through the years. The idea was simple - Coyne would travel the U.S. from east coast to Alaska and report on the culture of night at every stop.

He focuses on people who work at night and relates their experiences. While his prose meanders at times, there are some real gems here. I recommend A Day in the Night of America.

My husband and I happened to be staying at the author’s house through VRBO. We came across this book and read only parts of it so I have not completely read this book. The accounts about Gloucester fisherman and Dunkin’ Donuts University are incredible. He’s such a great writer!

I wouldn't have thought you could fill 300 pages about people who work the night shift but there are way more night jobs than I thought. Fascinating book.
